Barossa Valley

Those who have spent enough time backpacking around Australia may be under the impression that all Australian wine is resolutely foul, and comes in big boxes costing $10 a pop. Fair enough, most of that stuff does taste like it has been scooped from the bottom of a slurry pit, but good Australian wines are some of the best in the world. Arguably the best tipples in the country come from the Barossa Valley, which is an hour’s drive from Adelaide. The area has a very German feel to it – there are plenty of Lutheran churches (they’re pretty obsessed with building churches in these parts, you’ll note), oompah bands in pubs and Teutonic-style cafes.
