Sunday Roast and Live Sunday Entertainment in Melbourne Australia

P J O’Brien’s Irish Pubs

The classic Sunday roast of Britain is a tradition that began in the 15th century as an indulgent way for the British families to breakfast after church, and hence has been adopted by many the world over, including Australia.  The key items of this authentic British meal are red meat, potatoes and peas, gravy and Yorkshire puddings.   Variations could include meat, vegetables and accompaniments.  Some of Melbourne’s best are as follows;

Neighbourhood Wine

Fitzroy North

The three-course roast special, comfortable armchairs and fireplaces make this restaurant very attractive.  The menu changes weekly, and it is posted online 4 weeks ahead.  The meal starts with a light a la carte menu item such as glazed pumpkin with hazelnut and chilli.  Roast beef comes with celeriac and mustard leaf or red cabbage and mustard jus on alternate weeks, but always with Yorkshire puddings.  Pork is available too with glazed carrots and a sticky jus.  The meal costs AUS $ 40 per person.

A series of appetizers such as chicken liver pate flecked with crispy chicken skin and chives or marinated olives, charcuterie or terrine set the mood to dig into the roast pork, lamb, beef or chicken.  Side dishes change weekly, except crisp duck fat potatoes and seasonal vegetables.  A small dessert such as poached fruit and mascarpone wraps up this wonderful Sunday lunch at this beautiful Victorian restaurant.  The meal costs AUS $ 50 per person.

The Espy

St. Kilda

The Espy kitchen has put on Western Plain’s porchetta stuffed with an apple and grain mustard sauce, served with Kipfler potatoes and sprouts on the side.  Flinders Island lamb shoulder with salsa verde, dutch cream potato mash and a leafy salad, with a red wine vinaigrette and wood-roasted beef rump cap with tarragon béarnaise and Yorkshire puddings.  The meal that includes a glass of house wine or a pot of beer costs just AUS $ 30.

Turf Bar
