A series of appetizers such as chicken liver pate flecked with crispy chicken skin and chives or marinated olives, charcuterie or terrine set the mood to dig into the roast pork, lamb, beef or chicken.  Side dishes change weekly, except crisp duck fat potatoes and seasonal vegetables.  A small dessert such as poached fruit and mascarpone wraps up this wonderful Sunday lunch at this beautiful Victorian restaurant.  The meal costs AUS $ 50 per person.

The Espy

St. Kilda

The Espy kitchen has put on Western Plain’s porchetta stuffed with an apple and grain mustard sauce, served with Kipfler potatoes and sprouts on the side.  Flinders Island lamb shoulder with salsa verde, dutch cream potato mash and a leafy salad, with a red wine vinaigrette and wood-roasted beef rump cap with tarragon béarnaise and Yorkshire puddings.  The meal that includes a glass of house wine or a pot of beer costs just AUS $ 30.

Marquis of Lorne Hotel

While the façade of this Fitzroy bar isn’t very appealing, it’s the inside that really shines. Get comfortable by the crackling open fire and have an unforgettable roast meal that will leave you speechless. A half-chicken roasted and served on buttery, creamy mashed potatoes and complemented well by a lentil jus is a delicious way to finish any weekend.


Lezzet Anatolian Kitchen

The newly renovated Lezzet is the place to go for a Turkish-style Sunday roast. All banquets are served on low tables or trays, as is usual in Turkey, and all meals begin with delectable regional dips and warm bread to warm your insides. Then there’s the lamb, which has been cooked for 18 hours in a wood oven and is so soft that you’ll wonder why you ever ate lamb any other way.


Mama Rumaan

To have a roast without any meat may sound like heresy. But Melbourne, as the unofficial epicenter of vegan and vegetarian food, does not disappoint when it comes to meat-free roasts and other dishes. Some of the dishes are more akin to an elaborate brunch spread than a traditional Sunday roast. Moreover, they include perfectly cooked okra in a spiced tomato sauce with coriander, felafel patties with cumin-dusted chips, and spicy pickled veggies.


Woodland House

This isn’t your typical Sunday roast, believe it or not. Woodland House is a heavenly retreat located on a majestic Victorian estate in Melbourne’s inner-south. A modern four- or six-course set menu is available on Sundays, with dishes like suckling pig with XO sauce, dry miso, and chestnut puree coming to mind. Put on your best clothes and get ready to be pleased.

Michael Slade, the Northern Git’s owner, head chef, and expatriate, dishes up some of the best roast meals and fresh veggies you’ll find anywhere. And to top it all off, the Yorkshire puddings taste just like those from back home in the UK. 

The Bleakhouse Hotel, Albert Park 

Are there flames blazing? Check. Is there a long list of beverages? Check. An excellent meaty roast with a contemporary twist, served all weekend long? Yes, please! It’s true: Albert Park’s modern gastropub is a wintertime crowd-pleaser that never fails to impress. In one of the booths, you can have a rotating roast lunch or dinner for $25. It comes with all the fixings. When it comes to the kind of dish you serve, it might be anything from pork belly and quince to Spanish tomato stew and slow-cooked lamb leg. The staff will also suggest a wine pairing from one of Australia’s best wine regions each week for guests to try by the glass or bottle.
