The lyrical leader of the original Furious Five Melle Mel is one of the most iconic names in the history of hip-hop with a string of hits and groundbreaking feats to his name. You’ve heard his unmistakable voice on bonafide classics such as ‘White Lines (Don’t Do it)’, ‘The Message’, ‘Beat Street Breakdown’ and Chaka Khan’s ‘I Feel For You’ to name but a few. The first MC to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame he has worked with Lady Gaga, Quincy Jones, Afrika Bambaataa, Bootsy Collins, Ice Cube, Bill Laswell, Duran Duran, Ice-T, The Last Poets, LL Cool J, Lupe Fiasco and more.

The first rapper ever to call himself “MC” Mel is one of the pioneers of hip-hop and rated one of the greatest and most influential MC’s of all time. After a number of party flavored hits such as 1979‘s ‘Super Rappin’, 1980’s ‘Freedom’ & ’81’s ‘The Birthday Party’ Mel’s 1982 classic ‘The Message’ saw him turn to more socially aware subject matter and is one of the first examples of conscientious hip-hop. This trend would continue with hits such as ‘White Lines’, ‘Step Off’, ‘New York, New York’, ‘Jesse’, ‘Survival (Message II)’, ‘Vice’ (from the soundtrack to the smash hit TV show ‘Miami Vice’) and ‘Beat Street Breakdown’ for the seminal hip-hop film ‘Beat Street’. He also appeared on the all star charity/protest singles ‘Sun City’ (Artists Against Apartheid, with the likes of Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Run DMC, Bob Dylan & Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett) and with The King Dream Chorus & Holiday Crew (with Whitney Houston, Teena Marie, New Edition, Kurtis Blow and more) on ‘King Holiday’ aimed at having Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday declared a national holiday in the USA.

In 2007, Melle Mel & The Furious Five (joined by Grandmaster Flash, who never actually appeared on ‘The Message’ or ‘White Lines’) became the first rap group ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. In his acceptance speech, Mel implored the recording industry members in attendance to do more to restore hip-hip to the culture of music and art that it once was, rather than the culture of violence that it has become. He added, “I’ve never been shot, I’ve never been arrested, and I’ve been doing hip-hop all my life. I can’t change things all by myself. We need everybody’s help, so let’s do it and get this thing done.”
