For it’s 30th anniversary, the Melbourne Arts Festival will be returning with its most impressive world-class line-up yet.
This year’s program will feature 74 events from artists and companies from all across the globe, including Iceland, Faroe Islands, Israel, UK, Mali, USA, China, Sweden, France, Canada and Germany. There will be eight world premieres, 17 national premieres, 15 exclusive events and 5 specially commissioned performances.
This year Melbourne Festival celebrates art especially in writing and literary adaptations, including the West-End smash hit adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984, and Nobel Prize Winner Toni Morrison’s Shakespeare adaptation, Desdemona. Meanwhile, 40 years since Patti Smith’s iconic Horses will be celebrated with Courtney Barnett alongside the best of Melbourne’s artists.
Melbourne Festival will also present a series of literary response events such as a live reading of 1984 and ‘Language, Performance and Power.’ Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company will be presenting two exhilarating works while children can also enjoy a program of family-friendly entertainment, such as Rabbits and the puzzlingly magical Masquerade. Legendary jazz pioneer John McLaughlin will be performing a live show.
Meanwhile, the Foxtel Festival Hub will be buzzing this October, with a river top lounge, al fresco cafe, live music venue and – of course – a beer and cider bar.
