Sydney Art & AboutWhat’s on in Sydney New South Wales – Art & About Sydney 2011

What’s on in Sydney, New South Wales: Art & About Sydney!

Simply put, the idea behind Art & About is the aim to make our city of Sydney and let it act as a blank canvas for the public, transforming our space into a living, breathing gallery in and amongst the streets. It’s bound to have the public ponder about what’s being commented on, laugh out loud, do a double-take or simply put a smile on a face.

If you’ve been in a world of your own for the past nine years and haven’t attended a single Art & About the event, be prepared to ‘wow’ and ‘woahhh!’ at all the incredible installations, projects and art that will surround our city as we celebrate Art & About’s 10th year and counting!

Here’s a quick rundown of just a few of the very many projects that will be gracing our streets for the next month:

1. Laneway Art

There’s a heap of projects happening with Laneways this year, including work from Brook Andrew, Isidro Blasco, Emma Pike and Sarah Pangdon, just to name a few. Grabbing fresh artists and curators to “inject a fresh dose of inspiration and magic” into the laneways of Sydney, artists will be giving free talks and tours around their work throughout the duration of Art & About, with a final screening of works that have been involved in the Peri[pheral]scope project, collaborating with The Amazing Rolling Picture Show on the night in Wynyard Park.

“Scoping Out The Periphery” – 27 October, 8 pm -late

2. Contested Landscapes: Art Meets Science

Involving a collaboration of art and science, this project has analyzed and brainstormed how to beat the ever-decreasing amount of land and resources that we are faced with as a community. This project will be curated by writer, artist and curator Leo Robba, and is produced by Anthony Papp, who has produced events with some of Australia’s greatest companies. Artists featured within this include Jane Gillings, John Reid, Lucy Culliton, Rod McRae and plenty more.

When? 23 September – 3 October, 8am-9pm
Where? 31 Alfred St, Circular Quay NSW 2000

3. Unguarded Moments

Ever wondered what it would be like if faces from the past could be visible once again? Ever felt like there might be someone watching you as you walk along a street or down a laneway? “Unguarded Moments” brings this all to reality, sourcing documentary footage and portraits of previous residents of the city become projected onto buildings and surfaces throughout Millers Point, illustrating that fleeting moment of life and what has changed the area dramatically.

Projections commence from Abraham Mott Hall, following through Kent St towards Walsh Bay and Windmill Steps, then through Hickson Road towards the Harbour Bridge, finishing near Pottinger Street.

When? 23 September – 23 October

Where? Millers Point, Sydney

4. Michael Landy: Acts of Kindness

Michael Landy’s “Acts of Kindness” has been created for the 24th Kaldor Public Art Project in partnership with Art & About. It comments on the definition of kindness in today’s busy world, illustrating small gestures of generosity and thoughtfulness that go unrecognized throughout Sydney. A collection of stories about compassion have been gathered from the public, forming the basis of his work.

When? 23 September – 23 October

Where? Martin Place, Sydney NSW 2000

What are you still doing here? If it’s more convincing you need, you’ll be happy to know that the above-mentioned projects are all available to be enjoyed and admired for absolutely no price at all! Some events may require a small cost, but it’s hardly anything when you begin to embrace the greatness that is Sydney’s Art & About.
