Copenhagen duo GENTS release their debut LP ‘About Time’, on The Big Oil Recording Company.
The duo summarise their sound as ‘pathos served with a twinkle in the eye’, and it’s a pretty spot on description. Influenced by the sounds of 80s synthpop bands such as Tears for Fears and ABC, the album has an upbeat tone, with simplistic but effective production. This is particularly true of single ‘Brother’, which is carried by a catchy and carefree synth melody. However, they elevate their sound beyond pastiche with sincere lyrics and themes of love and the search for meaning, delivered with an iconic croon by Niels Fejrskov Juh. Single ‘Lost in the City’ sees Juh use the concept of being lost in a city as a metaphor for being trapped in one’s own thoughts, and it is an excellent demonstration of their surprisingly introspective side.
‘About Time’ is a sincere and meaningful release, yet it always manages to be fun. Pop music this distinctive is rare, making GENTS a duo to watch in 2017.
