What: BEN BROWNING EP Launch with GEOFFREY O’CONNOR, CUT COPY DJS, KNIGHTLIFE, FRANCIS CHANG and DJ SHAGS
When: Sunday 8 April
Price: $15.00 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

Cutters records is proud to announce the arrival of BEN BROWNING as the shiniest, newest addition to their stable of artists, and to celebrate his release, Ben is preparing to perform two exclusive shows in MELBOURNE and SYDNEY in April.

Ben is of course no stranger to the Cutters crew, being the bassist in CUT COPY and now he reveals his own talent for penning perfect crystalline pop with his first EP on Cutters Records. “Lover Motion” salutes both the past and the future, with 5 tracks laden with classic melody and ethereal synthesizer tones. His 12″ single release “I Can’t Stay” from the EP gained praise from Pitchfork, and displays the trademark Ben Browning touch: delicately strained melodic and harmonic stylings, with a seeming fragility which belies its true versatility.

Supporting in Melbourne is Geoffrey O’Connor who comes off an International tour with Jens Lekman and appearances at this year’s Laneway Festival, the former Crayon Fields frontman brings his elaborate mix of suave funk joyrides and modern synthetic power balladry to the party!

And the party doesn’t stop there! It ain’t a Cutters Records party without CUT COPY DJS (Dan and Tim) bringing the party to a rhythm-fuelled climax. Hot off the heels of a Grammy nomination for their most recent album Zonoscope, the Cutters O.G. are primed for party as always!

More? for sure! Cutters stalwart Knightlife, fresh from DJ shows in the US will bring his synthesized disco to the floor and with extra support from DJ Shags (Lostanimal / Pikelet) and Francis Chang, we’re ready to “bring it” all night long.

What: DAVID BROMBERG QUARTET (USA) with special guests
When: Tuesday 10 April
Price: $44.00 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

“The reason man created stringed instruments. David touched them with a lover’s fingers and they moaned that true love right back to him. Wood and wire and flesh spoke.” – Jerry Jeff Walker

He’s played with everyone, he’s toured everywhere, he can lead a raucous big band or hold an audience silent with a solo acoustic blues and now he’s heading our way! DAVID picked up a guitar at 13 and has since become a first-call “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, intimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including BOB DYLAN ( New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan ), LINK WRAY, THE EAGLES, RINGO STARR, WILLIE NELSON and CARLY SIMON. It wasn’t long before his solo work took off as a multi instrumentalist and grew into the DAVID BROMBERG BIG BAND. 2011 saw the release his latest album Use Me which has re-affirmed his place amongst the greats. The album collaborating with and being produced by friends like fellow BLUESFEST artists, JOHN HIATT & KEB’ MO’ as well as LEVON HELM, LOS LOBOS, TIM O’BRIEN, VINCE GILL, WIDESPREAD PANIC, DR. JOHN and LINDA RONSTADT.

“BROMBERG is simply one of the finest musicians you’ll ever hear . . . the guests here are big fun…but it’s BROMBERG’s brilliant playing, and the inherent sense of humour embedded in most of the tunes, that make it beyond special. An artist who is the embodiment of the phrase “worldclass musician” Bromberg does not disappoint.” -Daily Freeman, NY

Come and hear wood and wire and flesh speak as one of the great multi-instrumentalists and genuine session players performs around Australia for the first time.

What: DAWES (USA) with special guests BUSBY MAROU
When: Wednesday 11 April
Price: $27.50 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

They may yet to have step foot on Australian shores, but burgeoning Americana quartet Dawes are guaranteed to leave as adopted sons following their inaugural visit this April. The young LA band are steeped in the rich tradition of the Laurel Canyon sound, harking back to the glory days of the late-‘60s and early-‘70s when folk like Jackson Browne and The Eagles ruled the AM airwaves, their heart-on-sleeve imagery slathered in gorgeous melodies, and when traits like ‘sincerity’ and ‘beauty’ weren’t considered dirty words in the rock’n’roll lexicon.

Guitarist Taylor Goldsmith writes the band’s beautiful songs, but it’s the familial vocal harmonies with his drumming brother Griffin which transport them to a different place, their voices blending into an exquisite tapestry in exactly the way that nature intended. Lyrically their songs cover those universal tropes of the young and young-at-heart such as love and loss, yearning for home, and coveting wine and women, and these themes are wrapped exquisitely in the sun-imbued delivery of the seamless collective.

But you don’t have to take our word for it, a glance at who the band have already been cavorting with in their young lifespan will speak volumes of where Dawes are coming from: they were handpicked to be the backing band for The Band’s Robbie Robertson on his recent (and all-too-rare) solo excursion, they’ve recorded with members of Wilco, and both Benmont Tench and Jackson Browne himself appear on their sterling sophomore album Nothing Is Wrong, the long-player which came in at #35 on the US Rolling Stone’s prestigious Album Of The Year list for 2011.

But it’s the live sphere where they’re touted to be the real deal, and Australian audiences get to find out for themselves when Dawes come to the country to appear at the 2011 instalment of the East Coast Blues And Roots Festival alongside brothers-in-arms such as Justin Townes Earle, Steve Earle and My Morning Jacket, as well as heading to Boogie festival in rural Victoria and fronting their own headlining show at Toff In Town in Melbourne.

Dawes may be young but they’ve already built themselves a reputation as seasoned road warriors with a fearsome live show – they may never have ventured this far from home before but they’re bound to be met with open arms! Here’s to a long and prosperous relationship between Dawes and the Aussie fans that they’re about to begin accumulating!

What: JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW (IRELAND) Brings ‘Early in the Morning’ to Australia plus Special Guest EMILY ULMAN
When: Thursday 12 April
Price: $43.99 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

Irish troubadour James Vincent McMorrow makes his maiden voyage to Australia this April to introduce his remarkable solo talent. Alongside debut performances at Bluesfest, McMorrow will set out on an east coast run with stops in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. No novice to the stage, James has already captured audiences throughout Europe and USA with his passionate, pop oriented folk, including the UK where his spot on last year’s Glastonbury lineup had many new fans witness his magic. His self-recorded album “Early In The Morning” platforms his musical integrity and genuine talent with hypnotic lyrics inspired by life, love and literature.

James Vincent McMorrow’s live show is a hushed and reverential affair, each show met with pin drop silence as people are mesmerised by every word and syllable. It will not always be this way however, James shares his future and tells us his dream for a much grander affair that includes a full band in tow when he visits here again. “Playing on my own right now is beautiful because it allows me to connect on a very primitive level, but I’d like to be in a place soon where I can be surrounded with friends on stage to share this with me.”

James Vincent McMorrow’s “Early In the Morning” is released via Dew Process on Friday, March 2nd. Shows go on sale this Monday, February 6th. For a limited time only, fans have the chance to download his album for just $10.99 with tickets purchased online.

“Sounds both fresh and as if they’ve been in your head forever…McMorrow’s debut deserves its success.” – Q Magazine

“A captivating debut… An arresting journey from emotional trials to aural pleasure.” – Uncut

What: MY DISCO with special guests NO ZU and FORCES DJ
When: Saturday 14 April & Sunday 15 April
Price: $20 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

My Disco return to Australia this April for a run of dates throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Geelong. The three-piece have taken a well deserved break over the past 4 months, with members residing in Berlin, London and their hometown of Melbourne. Prior to their hiatus, 2011 was a busy year for the band which began with a headline slot at Camp A Low Hum in New Zealand, and ended with a 5 week European tour which included performances in locations such as Serbia and Macedonia.

January 2012 saw the release of My Disco’s very first music video for ‘Turn’, a track taken from their third release Little Joy. The video was directed by Stephanie Bailly and David Guest, edited by Billy Brown, and features ballerina Erinn Arnel and an impressive lighting show by Robin Fox. It was shot in one of My Disco’s favorite Melbourne venues, the Toff in Town, and to celebrate its release the band will be performing two back to back shows in April as part of this tour.

Little Joy, My Disco’s third album, was released in October 2010 to much fanfare, with Rolling Stone deeming it their “finest yet”, and TheVine describing it as “crushingly, terrifyingly great: so far ahead of the pack as to be in a different universe altogether”.

What: JESS HARLEN with special guests
When: Thursday 19 April …JUST ANNOUNCED!!!
Price: Tickets $15.00 + BF from www.moshtix.com.au

True to the quality displayed throughout debut album Neon Heartache (2010), Harlen proves herself once more as a delectable vocalist and relatable songwriter, mastering her own style with cathartic conviction. Joined again by the Mercury Prizewinning producer Plutonic Lab, Park Yard Slang maintains sonic consistency throughout. Full of cross-genre exploration, the duo includes elements of dance hall, hip hop, pop, and of course, that signature Harlen soul. Unafraid to embrace simplicity, Park Yard Slang revels in the independent beauty of instrumental solos and the texture of Jess Harlen’s voice.

The album opens with ‘Get Ready’, a chain-gang inspired, a-cappella moment featuring Hau Latukefu of triple j and Koolism. Layered with rich, bluesy harmonies, the track gradually builds around the proclaiming chorus and driving beat. ‘Weaving’ is textured with glittery production, and loaded with conviction; as killer lyrics testify to the emotional honesty invested all through the record. First single off the album ‘Let You Down’ embraces a hearty and clean pop vibe. The driving beat and crunching Gibson provides a trustworthy pulse for Harlen’s lush vocals to dig deepinto the groove.

Lyrically Harlen shines in moments like ‘Up To Me’, the most auto-biographical moment on the LP, a snapshot of a lifelong struggle endured by a wild dreamer aching to break through socio-economic disadvantage. ‘Plantation’ keeps the mood high and strong over substantial dancehall production, an obvious party track commenting on the current apocalyptic state of affairs. Rapper RuCL delivers a striking second verse and gives the song a new worldly dimension. All in all, Park Yard Slang pays its respect to classic soul music. Accessible, progressive and a new space Harlen can definitely call her own.

What: CHET FAKER ‘Thinking in Textures’ EP Tour
When: Saturday 21 April & Sunday 22 April
Price: $12.00 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

Shrouded in secrecy, hidden behind an alias and disguised by a beard, Chet Faker enjoys the mystery. Hailing from the tight-knit disco and house music scene in Melbourne, Australia and taking elements from an acoustic past, Chet Faker has carved out a unique style that fuses personal stories of love and loss with an electronica soul that reaches far beyond his homeland. Chet quickly came to everyone’s attention when his cover of ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet hit #1 on the worldwide indie music aggregator, Hype Machine.

The debut EP ‘Thinking in Textures’ will be out in Australia through Remote Control/Opulent on 23rd March. The first track to be heard from the release is ‘Terms and Conditions’, a gorgeously penned track hard to categorise from this part jazz, part soul and part electronic artist. The EP is also scheduled for release in the UK by Chess Club Records on 26th March following recent radio success. BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe played ‘I’m Into You’ in his Next Hype section, and Mary Anne Hobbs from XFM has also been giving ‘Terms and Conditions’ a few spins. He recently supported Toro y Moi and Washed out for their shows in Australia and is heading to SXSW in March, where he will be appearing at the Filter Magazine showcase. He’ll be back in Australia for an east coast tour in support of the new EP, and with previous shows in Melbourne and Sydney selling out, be quick to avoid missing out on tickets!

Melbourne five piece LOKI are delighted to announce the autumn release of their single “disappear.” The song, along with three previously unreleased accompanying tunes, demonstrates Loki’s evocative and somewhat cinematic take on folk music. The release has an undeniable personal touch, from its recording roots in the singer’s lounge room right down to hand sewn and printed CD sleeves. With the help of Red Jezabel’s Dave Parkin, this release announces Loki’s presence on the Melbourne stage, after a seriously drawn out hibernation phase due to the demands of their self recording ways. What: VAN SHE ‘Idea of Happiness’ Single Tour with special guests
When: Tuesday 24 April
Price: $12 + BF
Tickets: www.moshtix.com.au

Van She are back! And indeed back with a cosmic-tropo bang as they invite you to enjoy their sophomore record, their Idea Of Happiness out this July on Modular Recordings.

So uplifting it’s practically levitational, Idea Of Happiness is Van She’s most focused, joyous musical excursion to date. An album stirred by sunbaked travels and fleeting truths, and shaken with the sands of time, Idea Of Happiness was recorded, engineered and produced by the band themselves in Kings Cross, Sydney.

Their self-sufficient approach to the record allowed them the time and space to not only fine tune to the nth degree each cymbal splash and crashing wave sample, but also left them free to give ideas the time and space to hang loose. They may have walked a slow, deliberate path to realising album #2 but the result is all the better for it.

The record was mixed in Los Angeles with Tony Hoffer, the perfect man for the job with a resume that includes work with Beck, Air, Phoenix and M83.
