Playing at this year’s Sunburnt Christmas Festival, we caught up with the multi-talented, multi-tasking Timmy Trumpet.

Travel to Western Australia

It’s fair to say you sound like you’re pretty busy most of the time, what have you been up to this week?

I did Gold Coast, Brisbane and Newcastle yesterday. Today I’m in Sydney and Byron Bay and we haven’t hit the weekend yet, which is going to be much busier.

Your skill set as a DJ is pretty unique, what was it that made you decide to combine trumpet playing with DJing?

There wasn’t much money in the jazz scene so I tried something different and it worked. There are plenty of sax and bongo players doing something similar so I’m not the first to do it, but I don’t know of any other solo DJ / Trumpet combined acts here in Australia.

Do you play any other instruments?

Piano, which has really helped on the production side of things. Its one thing to be a DJ, but you have to produce these days to get anywhere.

Are you looking forward to playing at Sunburnt this Christmas?

Couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate Christmas than Bondi Beach.

Who are you looking forward to seeing?

The Bombs Away boys are great performers and killing it on the production circuit. We’re actually working on a collaboration at the moment.

What would you be doing if you weren’t working on Christmas Day?

Spending it at home, wishing I was at Sunburnt Festival.

Do you see it as work, or would you rather be performing?

Its never work if you love what you do. The traveling can get exhausting but the music makes it worthwhile every time.

You’ve played along some greats such as Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, which was your favourite?

Pacha Ibiza with Eric Morillo was pretty amazing, but I’ve got to say the most lethal combo is with local DJ’s ‘The Stafford Brothers.’ Playing alongside them for the Future Music Festival National Tour was something I’ll never forget. There’s nothing like playing in front of your home crowd.

Where’s the best place your career has taken you?

Ibiza and Miami are my favourites for partying. I love the cultural clash of the Dominican Republic and South Korea though too.

Who’s inspiring you at the moment?

Swedish House Mafia just sold out Madison Square. That’s pretty inspiring for DJs if you ask me.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I never stop listening so it’s hard to narrow it down. Everything from Trentemoller to Miles Davis.

What’s a typical day in the life of Timmy Trumpet?

Race to the Airport. Find out plane is delayed. Spend waiting time answering questions to interviews like this.

What are your plans for 2012?

Making the move to LA with the Stafford Brothers to film Season 3. The house music scene is really starting to grow in the US so hopefully we can crack that market also.
