Northcote Social Club November ’11 Listings-What’s on in Melbourne Victoria?

Northcote Social Club continues to do what it does best by serving up the best in underground and local talent with a few big names thrown in for kicks. This month’s highlights include Paris Wells, Emma Louise (selling out fast!), Deep Sea Arcade and Thumbdamentals as well as Nothcote’s regular Monday night underground showcase ‘Midnight  Mass’ and the annual Northcote Independent Fashion Festival on 18th November.

Wednesday 9 November 2011 7:30 pm – ELECTRIC EMPIRE with The Putbacks and DJ Slim Charles

The boys from Electric Empire will be launching their new single ‘Yes I Will’ at this show. The single offers the first taste of their new EP and sees the boys’ trademark smooth soul and silky harmonies punctuated by a full brass section. The powerhouse three-part harmonies and water-tight rhythms of Electric Empire make for an explosive show.

Thursday 10 November 2011 7:30 pm – PARIS WELLS with special guests

Having toured in the past with Plan B, Robyn, Lily Allen, Justin Timberlake and Aloe Blacc, Paris Wells is now preparing to head out on her own ‘No Hard Feelings’ tour in support of her latest release ‘Various Small Fires’. Stepping out from the studio where she has been writing her follow-up album, set for release mid-next year, she will be performing tracks from the latest release along with a few surprises.

Friday 11th November 2011 8:30 pm – THE FAUVES (album launch) with I, A Man and Favourite Game

One of Australia’s most underrated bands, The Fauves plays their own brand of guitar pop featuring wry, humorous lyrics, much in the style of fellow Australian band TISM, but infinitely more subtle. Forming in 1988, the four-piece took their name from the short-lived art movement of the early 1900s, with ‘fauve’ being the French word for ‘wild animal’.

Saturday 12th November 2011 8:30 pm – EMMA LOUISE with Charlie Mayfair and Buckley Ward

Things aren’t letting up for the extremely talented songstress, Emma Louise. Shortly after her notable wins at the Queensland Music Awards, the announcement has come for her first national tour. With a second EP due before the year is out, come experience Emma’s profound ability to hold the audience in the palm of her hand when she performs at this show.

One of Australia’s most unique rock bands, Rudely Interrupted has gathered to support the ‘National Disability Insurance Scheme.’ They have toured the world, played some of the biggest and most prestigious stages, starred in an AFI nominated critically acclaimed documentary film, and released their debut record ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ worldwide on iTunes.

The annual Northcote Independent Fashion Festival will return to the Northcote Social Club with another stellar group of Melbourne musicians flaunting the area’s local fashion. Known as NIFFTY, the one-night-only show will see eleven artists performing, styled in clothes which can be found (and bought at discounted prices) from High Street stores, styled by NIFFTY coordinator and fashion stylist Solange Mardones.

Saturday 19th November 2011 8:30 pm – DEEP SEA ARCADE (single launch) with special guests

Sydney’s five-piece Deep Sea Arcade will hit the road in support of their brand new single ‘Girls’, the first cut from their debut album ‘Outlands’. ‘Girls’, produced by the band and mixed by Dan Grech-Marguerat (The Vaccines) is an anthemic step forward for the band and is currently a fave on BBC Radio 1 in the UK.

Canadian-born, Austin-based singer, songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player Ray Bonneville is noted for having one of “the sexiest guitar styles around” (Acoustic Guitar)and has played with such blues luminaries as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Robert Cray. Following the success of the digital single ‘Mississippi’, Ray is touring in support of his new full-length album ‘Bad Man’s Blood.’

Wednesday 23 November 2011 7:30 pm – Melting Pot presents ‘A Pot Full of Thanks’ feat. DAPPLEGRIM with Tane Emia-Morre, Jude St Jude and Jess Witney

Dapplegrim is an all-girl nautical folk band, hailing from country Victoria and gigging around Melbourne since late 2010. With sweet harmonies, quirky original songwriting and featuring the talents of Ellie Nalder on lead vocals, Phoebe Sanger on vocals and guitar, Abbyfaye Thompson on drums and percussion and Eilidh Southren on bass, Dapplegrim will headline this Melting Pot Presents show.

Sleek, sweaty, banging and pro; when it comes to their live show, Blue Mountains-come-Newtown hip-hop three-piece Thundamentals are a band in demand. As their new album ‘Foreverlution’, featuring lead single ‘Paint The Town Red’, was hitting the shelves six weeks ago, Thundamentals were supporting Big Boi and then went on to support Drapht, so it is only now that the band announces this ‘Foreverlutuion’ album launch tour. Sudanese singer/songwriter Ajak Kwai brings a unique African vocal style and repertoire into modern arrangements with Afro beats. Now based in Melbourne, Australia, Ajak and her band create an exciting blend of dinka-style folk music paired with a stunning live show. Ajak’s previous two album releases have led to wide international acclaim, seeing Ajak heralded as one of the most prominent and influential musicians of Sudan today.
