Riding The West Side
Welcome to the wild side of Australia… of course we’re talking about Western Australia!
Australia’s wild, wild west is one epic journey for anyone looking for the ultimate in overland adventure. From the pristine white sandy beaches, to the searing heat of the north-west, craggy gorges plunging hundreds of feet down into crystal clear pools – you can literally see it all in Australia’s largest state.
Western Australia covers an epic 2.646 million km²! And when you compare that to the measly 243,610 km² the entire UK covers, that’s a whole lot of ground to cover. To truly make the most of this vast and varied state, a great route to take is from WA’s capital city of Perth right up to the furthermost city of Broome.
Along the way you can encounter your fair share of national parks. How does swimming with Whale Sharks (March – July) and snorkelling one of the largest reefs in the world sound to you? Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, WA’s Ningaloo Reef is relatively unspoilt and is where you can see a kaleidoscope of coral and marine life in the tropical warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Perhaps you might even fancy abseiling down some of the steepest rock faces you ever did see at Kalbarri National Park. Or maybe you just want to strip off and cool down in one of the many soothing rock pools of Karajini National Park.
When you get to northern WA, you’ll find yourself amongst some real cowboys as you reach some fully functioning modern day cattle stations, (yes, this is your moment to shout in your head Mrs Boss, Mrs Boss for all you ‘Australia’ and Hugh Jackman fans).
The advantage the journey between Perth to Broome has over other well-trodden overland trails in Australia has is that you can literally experience the huge variety that Australia has to offer in one fell swoop in as little as 10 days!
