Jason Greenhalgh (Q-Project) and Paul Smith (Spinback) first met in 1987 brought together through a mutual love of hip-hop music. Over the coming years, the pair developed a deep appreciation for Techno and Dance music at the start of its worldwide takeover. By 1991, Spinback was an established DJ, gracing the decks at events week in week out, including the world famous “Universe”. Q-Project entered the studio too, with his first release “Freestyle
Fanatic”. Their first label, Legend Records was launched with Q-Project’s highly acclaimed “Champion Sound” in 1992. It took their profile to new heights, and it remains one of the most influential tunes of its time and generation this was swiftly followed by the start of their early recording career together under the
name Funky Technicians … and so the unstoppable collaboration had begun. In 1997, the well-established pair launched the Computer Integrated Audio (C.I.A) label and the alias Total Science, was born. Over the coming years, Total Science had releases on all the major D&B labels including Metalheadz, Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Hospital, Tru Playaz, 31 Records (Doc Scott), Reinforced, Soul:r, Shogun Audio to name but a few, as well as releases under
their own C.I.A. and various other imprints.
Survival released his 5th and highly anticipated LP (His 3rd on
Dispatch Recordings) last June (2017).The album (Take It Back) showcases the funk and groove that Steve has carved out over the years and highlights exactly why he is always at the forefront of modern cutting edge music. This is further testament to the fact that he is equally at home as a solo artist or working with others. The album features long established collabs with artists such as
Break, Ant TC1, Codebreaker, Naomi Pryor & Eleanor Higgins.
A recent example of his ability to work closely with others is a current partnership with Script as SCAR that has seen many original releases across all Metalheadz labels such as the “Caged EP”, as well as remixes such as Rufige Kru’s “Dark Rider” which charted in the top 75 of the national charts. SCAR presented their debut Album “The Orkyd Project” in July 2016 on Goldie’s Metalheadz label to worldwide acclaim. This relationship continues with one of the founding labels of Drum & Bass into 2017 and beyond with several releases scheduled, and they are currently working on their second SCAR artist album. Over the years their consistent output with another highly renown label in DnB, Dispatch Recordings, has seen many successful releases more
pencilled in for this year and next.
