If you want to see more of Western Australia, why not take a road trip from Perth to Wave Rock, the astounding formation in Hyden, just over a three-hour drive from the city? The journey will take you through idyllic Outback towns and stretches of road that continue as far as the eye can see.

Embark on a road trip to see the extraordinary ‘Wave’ on Hyden Rock in Australia’s famous Golden Outback region. This rock formation has been styled by natural forces and as a result, resembles a giant wave. Multi coloured granite adds to the magnificence of this aesthetic beauty and is a cause for fascination amongst those who see it. You can marvel at its history being that it is over 2,700 million years old, or capture touristy pictures of you nearly being submerged by the wave.

Now there’s several ways you could get to Wave Rock, you could take an organised tour that will save you missing any highlights on your way… or if you’re feeling brave you could hire a campervan or 4WD and take to the highway on an adventure to visit this natural phenomenon.

If you’re starting out from Perth, fear not, as it’s only a 3-4 hour drive inland to Wave Rock, with so much to see along the way. Start your journey on Albany highway and go via Brookton to take the Southern route to Wave Rock. You can drive up glorious Greenmount Hill, the oldest plateau on Earth, in the Darling Range; you can view the archaean granites from the high ground of the Perth Hills and in road cuts, with good examples in the Mundaring Weir area.

Armadale

This is a great first stop as it is only 30 minutes from Perth CBD. Armadale is perfect for you if you’re a lover of all things vehicular. Visit the Bert Tyler Vintage Machinery Museum and discover a rare and exciting collection of Twentieth Century engines. If you were ever a boy scout then you’ll love the Morse Code demonstrations on Tuesdays between 10am and 1pm; you will get the chance to send your own telegraph message. If you’re more of a water baby and enjoy watching regattas then head over to Champion Lakes and catch a highly competitive boat race.

Brookton

Once you’ve travelled 2km from Perth, on the left side of the road, you will see farming land and the beautiful surrounding bushland before the town of Brookton. Once you enter the shire, take a break and grab lunch from Stumpy’s Gateway Roadhouse on Brookton Highway or head over to the Old Railway And Pioneer Park with your prepacked picnic. Sit by the pretty water feature (try not to take a dip) and then browse the unique arts and crafts store.

Corrigin

Enter the friendly countryside community in Corrigin and you’ll receive a warming welcome to their recreational activities. Take a stroll around the Shopping District Route and see Corrigin Museum. While you’re on the Town Site Circuit, take a dip in the Corrigin swimming pool to cool off after the walk around town – but remember to pack swimming gear and towels for your journey. Corrigin is known as the famous dog-in-a-ute town and has a nearby dog cemetery which you can visit. Dog is a man’s best friend after all.

Kondinin

Once you enter Kondinin, you will be 272km east of Perth on the Brookton Highway and close to your destination. Kondinin plays homage to the families that called it home with The Centenary Walk; a trail of exquisite mosaics that have been laid out to commemorate past and present families, businesses and organisations. Indulge in a coffee from CC’s Coffee & Cakes to retrieve the energy you lost during the drive, and then learn more about the Wheatbelt towns that make up the various pathways to Wave Rock.

Hyden

End your pilgrimage in Hyden, the closest town to Wave Rock. In Hyden there’s indigenous rock art at Mulka’s Cave, the largest collection of lace in the southern hemisphere and a great wildlife park where you can get excited to see intriguing rare white kangaroos. From Hyden, make your way to Wave Rock which stands an outstanding 15 metres high and 110 metres long.

To make the most of this spectacular rock formation and surrounding activities, spend the night in one of Hyden’s picturesque cottages. Go to the Wave Rock Lakeside Resort for two-bedroom cottages on the shores of Lake Magic. If you took your campervan for the ride, the base of Wave Rock hosts a tranquil caravan park in a natural bush setting, perfect for an overnight stay.

Drive through the Jarrah Forest of Darling Range for a completely different and enchanting experience. The Jarrah Forest is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna and has sign-posted drives for you to enjoy the scenic land. It’s a four hour drive through the otherworldly sounds of Jarrah Forest and its captivating bloom before you come to historic York.

York

York sits in the Avon Valley of Western Australia and is the oldest inland town, 97km east of Perth. This town will charm you with its picturesque tendencies and beauty. Take a drive tour through the Avon Valley to discover the hidden allure of York. If you’re an adrenaline junkie then start your morning with an invigorating sky dive from 14,000 feet for 60 seconds of heart-stopping freefall. Quairading

The name Quairading comes from the indigenous word ‘Kwirading’, meaning the home of a small bush animal – this is reason enough to visit Quairading. Stop off in Quairading to see the artistic work of Ian Wills; believed to be the only full time natural wood sculptor in Australia. He was inspired by the shapes of the roots of trees and their colours, and was a man that fought against the weakness of illness to live and continue his passion. His artistry is inspiration enough to achieve every goal. The woodland areas of the reserve have unique and wonderful wandoo, york and salmon gum forests that are perfect to experience before you set back on Quairading-York Road, with a little over two hours ‘til you reach your final destination.
