Parachute Youth (‘Count To Ten’ Tour)

Parachute Youth have become one of Australia’s premiere acts of 2012. Their debut single, ‘Can’t Get Better Than This’ rapidly shot to #1 most played and requested at JJJ while simultaneously ascending to #1 in the AIR charts. They’ve recently won the In The Mix award for best new act and scored nominations from AIR for best new act and best Australian single, plus they recently played to adoring crowds at Parklife. But the attention isn’t all at home! The boys have already started to chart in Europe and with recent signings to Warner in the UK and Ultra in the US, this may be your last chance to see Parachute Youth in such an intimate environment.

Dark Funeral (Sweden)

Swedish black metal outfit Dark Funeral return to Australia once again to terrorise our stages with “vast walls of sound” and their “classic black metal, with clouds of red dry ice and an ominous electronic drone announcing the songs” (Metal Hammer). Forming in 1993 in Sweden, Dark Funeral are a force to be reckoned with due to their in-your-face, satanic, dark metal music known across the land as “one of the leading black metal bands” (All Music). Dark Funeral’s stage show is unlike any other. In addition to their intense musical ferocity, their performances are adorned with all the stagecraft the black metal genre can deliver; corpse paint, weapons, spikes and fire breathing. It’s a spectacle you can only comprehend live and in the flesh. Featuring a new unholy line-up of committed conspirators, Dark Funeral bring their “magnificently brutal” Nordic black metal blizzard back to Australia to stake their claim amongst the premier elite of the black metal world. Watch the uncut video for ‘My Funeral’ here.

Seminal British 2-Tone outfit, The Selecter, are thrilled to announce their very first trip to Australia this November. This most vital and visceral of British bands will bring their infectious musical message of multiculturalism and hope around the country, and are guaranteed to set crowds alight with their bop-tastic fusion of ska-pop-reggae. The Selecter pioneered the ska revival movement alongside label mates The Specials and Madness, and were responsible for some of the scene’s classic hits, including ‘On My Radio’, the frenetic ‘Three Minute Hero’, ‘Celebrate The Bullet’ (ridiculously banned at the time by the BBC) and the quintessential 2-Tone track, ‘Too Much Pressure’.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group (USA – Mars Volta/ At The Drive In)

Like our own home grown Nick Cave before him, Omar Rodriguez Lopez is a world-renowned artist whose talents go far beyond the musical landscape he’s most renowned for. Coming to prominence in the early ‘90s, Omar made his mark as a guitarist in the ground breaking post-hardcore band, At The Drive In. In the early ‘00s he cemented his name as a music force, as guitarist and produce in the Grammy Award winning progressive psych/kraut rock-influenced ensemble, The Mars Volta. Now, Omar has established himself as a world class solo artist that has something vital and relevant to say, sonically speaking.

The Pretty Things (UK)

London’s The Pretty Things, huge in the 1960s and ‘70s rock and roll scene, pioneered a raw approach to rhythm and blues (and later, psychedelia) that influenced a number of key bands from the 1960s British invasion, particularly The Rolling Stones, and David Bowie, whose first hero was Phil May. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the 1970 Rolling Stone ‘Album Of The Year’, ‘Parachute’, which they’re celebrating by releasing a two disc limited edition CD set and limited edition heavyweight vinyl. The band is also back on the road, currently touring Europe, and set to hit Australian shores this December.

Hot Snakes (USA)

Once touted the saviours of rock ‘n’ roll, Hot Snakes (US) have reformed and are heading our way to play three shows only, with one in Sydney, one at Meredith Music Festival, and this Corner show. Founded in 1999 in San Diego, California, by John Reis (Drive like Jehu & Rocket from the Crypt) and Rick Froberg (Drive like Jehu), Hot Snakes certainly made their mark on the punk rock scene. Due to logistics (band members lived on almost opposite sides of the US) they called it a day soon after their last Australian tour, but now have reformed to play a small handful of shows at some of the world’s coolest music festivals heralded by an invitation from our very own Meredith Music Festival. The last time the lads landed on Australian soil was in 2006, at which time they also recorded a live studio album with ABC and Triple J, aptly named, ‘Thunder Down Under’. Watch the video for ‘Braintrust’ here.

Sharon Van Etten (USA)

Mistletone presents the first Australian tour by Brooklyn-based Sharon Van Etten. Singer, songwriter, collaborator and incredibly captivating performer, the irrepressible Sharon Van Etten is nothing short of indie rock royalty. Backed by her stunning three piece band, Sharon will showcase her bittersweet songs with all their raw intimacy and dramatic sweep. Sharon’s arresting voice was first heard in 2009, when her debut album, ‘Because I Was In Love’, was accompanied by the sound of critics fawning the world over. Follow up, ‘Epic’ (2010), and this year’s ‘Tramp’, have only solidified her reputation. ‘Tramp’ features guest appearances by Zach Condon (Beirut), Bryce Dessner (The National), Julianna Barwick and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, proving the best and brightest of American indie rock are lining up to get their prints on a Sharon Van Etten record. She has played with The Antlers and collaborated with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Megafaun on the ‘Songs Of The South’ project. ‘Tramp’ has been called “sublime” by MOJO and “Americana’s best kept secret… one of the must-hears of 2012” by The Guardian. Don’t miss Sharon when she plays this Falls sideshow at the Corner. Watch Sharon Van Etten give a captivating performance of ‘Serpents’ live at Lollapalooza this year.

Maximo Park (UK)

It’s been seven years since Maximo Park released their critically acclaimed and Mercury Prize nominated debut album, ‘A Certain Trigger’, and shot up the UK charts with their breakthrough single, ‘Apply Some Pressure’. Now, with over two million albums sold and an arena tour of Europe under their belt, the British five piece are currently in rip roaring form; more vital, forceful and potent than ever. Their recently released fourth album, ‘The National Health’, was recorded with the legendary Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters, Patti Smith), and it’s a ferocious and rousing blast of incendiary rock and roll. It harnesses the confusion, agitation and chaos currently seeping through the nation’s veins and jolts it violently awake, creating a persuasive call to arms for the disenchanted. That’s not to say they’ve lost their tender touch, the album contains some of the most exquisite love songs Maximo Park have written yet. Cosmo Jarvis has released his third album, ‘Think Bigger’, to rave reviews with the lead single, ‘Love This’, gaining lots of radio airplay and lots of YouTube hits thanks to the much talked about devil suit. His music and films have made him an online phenomenon with his YouTube shorts, usually observational comedy skits about small town life, being viewed 3.7 million times – his contagious shanty single, ‘Gay Pirates’, picking up over a million hits alone. ‘Tell Me Who To Be’ will be the next single off the album and is a song about expressing the ability to adapt to whatever is required by those who make you feel like an outsider for the purpose of fitting in. Jarvis played almost all the instruments on the new album. He produced it and shot, wrote, and stars in all the accompanying videos.

65daysofstatic (UK)

Sheffield’s electro-post-rock titans, 65daysofstatic, formed in 2001 and soon became known for their incredible sound – a blend of live electronics, drum and bass beats and the pummelling build and dynamics of post-rock. Over five albums and hundreds of shows across the globe, the band has earned a loyal following for their powerful, forward-thinking fusion of dance, rock and electronica. The success of 2004 debut ‘The Fall Of Math’ and the follow up ‘One Time For All Time’ earned 65DOS a personal invitation to support The Cure on their 2007-09 arena tour across the US, UK, Europe and Asia. Since then they have played some of the world’s biggest festivals, including Sonisphere and Summersonic. While their records showcase their ornate instrumentation and experimental sound manipulations, their live show is a rock and roll rave that has made them one of the most popular instrumental touring acts in the world. Now, with the announcement of their first ever Australian tour, 65dos have announced the re-release of their entire back catalogue in Australia, with deluxe editions of each album including previously unreleased tracks as well as guest appearances from Robert Smith (The Cure) and Australian instrumental group sleepmakeswaves.
