11 Reasons You Should Be Sailing In Burma Right Now

Follow us on Google News

Life has never been such a breeze as when on board a catamaran in the Myeik Archipelago, off the south coast of Burma.

Despite being on a boat, it’s not just about the sailing. It’s also about the insane experiences you will have during your days and nights at sea with your crew and fellow travellers. And here are a few reasons you should be out there, soaking up every aspect of Burmese boat life right now.

1. You can release your inner mermaid

Crack out the breaststroke, snorkel, float around, or even create your very own version of a synchronised swim; whatever takes your fancy in the salty seas is A-OK. So be free and flip those fins!

2. You’ll eat fresh from the spear

Your skipper is most likely to be a talented seafarer. Not only will he be in complete control of your vessel, he may also be prone to grabbing his spear gun and nabbing some fresh fish from the big, bad ocean for you to feast on. Bravo!

3. You’ll sleep under the stars

You can sleep inside if you want, but we reckon you should head to the front of the boat and become one with nature on the comfy catamaran net.

4. You’ll get fit

Make fresh footprints in the sand and explore the jungle-clad islands by kayak and paddleboard. The boat comes fully equipped with everything you need for seafaring adventures, so what are you waiting for? Get your paddle on!

5. Indulge in the finest food

Fresh tropical fruits with your breakfast, and the finest flavours mixed up by your cook daily for lunch and dinner makes meal times very popular. We’re talking pad thai, stir fried vegetable dishes and Asian soups, just to name a few.

And then there’s afternoon tea. A brownie always goes down well to break up an afternoon of oceanic explorations – and give you the energy to get back out into the turquoise

6. You’ll meet the Mokens

Pass daily pleasantries with the local sea faring Moken people as they sail past in their wooden fishing boats, and if you are lucky your skipper will take you to visit the only village for miles around. It’s small with a population of 800 people, but feels like a big city after all those deserted bays.

The kiddos at the school are not shy about coming to say ‘hi’ either; they’ll most likely flock towards you to practice their English, or play clapping games. We love ‘em.

7. You’ll make great mates

You could argue we always meet awesome people when we travel, but here on this little boat, in the middle of a big sea, it’s you and them.

Luckily you have endless opportunities to hang out with everyone together or individually, whether on the boat or out on an island. You’re sure to be surrounded by besties by the time the trip comes to an end.

8. You’ll recharge your batteries

Out in the middle of the Andaman Islands, wi-fi or phone signal just isn’t a thing yet. Engage with your awesome new buddies without the temptation of techno distraction, and embrace the chill side of life.

9. Sample the beer of Burma

It’s the best tasting brew around, and seeing as you are in said country, there happens to be a hefty stock of the local brew on the boat. Don’t worry, Chang and Leo are also kept on ice on board, but a Myanmar is a must drink if you’re looking to get in touch with the local way.

10. You’ll get bronzed

Don’t underestimate that sun. We know you’re switched-on travellers, but when it comes to sailing, the sun hits you all day every day, from angles you didn’t even know existed. So wear a high factor SPF, and still come back the envy of your mates with a brand new healthy glow.

11. You’ll enjoy the glow of the campfire

Spending one evening on land with a massive campfire and barbecue dug out from the sand makes for a pretty incredible island memory (tribal dancing optional). And then there’s the ocean’s best-kept secret – bioluminescent plankton, sparkling on the surface of the water.
