Agnes Water & Town Of 1770 Queensland A well kept Australain secret
Agnes Water & Town Of 1770 Queensland The town of 1770 is such a well-kept secret you could rummage around the internet for hours and only find a few things about it.
Luckily, BBM has been to this up and coming tourist destination and we can see why the locals are trying to keep such a beautiful place to themselves. The truth is that 1770 is known more for its history than its tourism. After all, it is the coastline where Captain James Cook made his first landing and discovery of Australia. While Captain Cook and his men came ashore for some much needed repairs and supplies, you’ll find that this is definitely not a bad place to be stranded.
Agnes Water & Town Of 1770 Queensland While here you can enjoy the quiet appeal of the coastal communities, experience incredible hiking and bushwalking through the rainforests, go extreme with loads of watersports and surfing, or take it easy with a picnic on a private area of the beach.
The best part about this area is that you will not have to compete with millions of other backpackers to take pleasure in it. The area is quiet and calm but offers all of the fun activities you’d expect from a major resort town. If natural beauty could make you sick then the town of 1770 would cause more of a panic than swine flu.
You will experience things like never before in these quiet villages. There are implausible views of the rainforest and the ocean that can be seen from wherever you are. This scenery is especially delightful when you sit down and relax with a drink. We found the Deck Bar and Restaurant to be a perfect place to enjoy a state of pure blissfulness as you soak up the sun.
However, there are only a few places to drink and dine in 1770, but if you head over to Agnes Waters you’ll find a few more options. We’ve made it quite clear that 1770 is a haven for nature-lovers but we haven’t even begun to talk about the camping opportunities that you’ll find here.
There are four National Parks in the vicinity that will give even the staunchest city-dwellers a desire to get in touch with nature. You will need a four-wheel drive car to get to most of these parks and you can choose to hire one for yourself or go with an organised tour group.
The hiking here is absolutely breathtaking and there’s nothing better than dining outdoors after you’ve cooked up your own food right on the barbeque. Another great way to take in some of the more natural elements of 1770 is by taking an Environmental Amphibious “LARC” Tour across the pristine waters of Bustard Bay. The term LARC actually stands for Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo Vessels and it looks just as ridiculous as it sounds. These bright pink vessels travel on both land and sea and will allow you to see some of the most beautiful parts of the area.
There are a variety of trips offered that will take you to places like Round Hill Creek and Eurimbula National Park. A typical day trip usually includes morning tea, lunch and an Aussie Billy tea, so you cannot go wrong on this award-winning tour.
Most visitors to the area really appreciate the wide variety of accommodation that are available. Some of the options are very fun and unique while others are a bit more traditional. You can prove your toughness and camp outdoors throughout your entire stay here, or you can rent a self-catering apartment. The choice is really up to you and depends on how much you want to spend. The luxury villas are very unique to the area and all of them are only a short walk away from the beautiful beaches and the town centre.
Agnes Water
IF you haven’t experienced enough of the environment in 1770 then Agnes Water is just the place for you to feed your craving. This area has received much praise for being the home of the northernmost surf beaches in Queensland, but it’s also home to the kind of laid back beach atmosphere that backpackers search high and low for. You will feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secluded beach paradise with all of the comforts of home.
You may wonder what has kept this place natural and free from the horrors of tourism. Well, it’s surrounded by tons of national parks, beaches, and ocean that hide it away, but many feel that the area is too striking to be just another resort town. The fact that there isn’t really a ton of shopping and business here is definitely part of the appeal.
You can find some nice cafés by the beach but this area is truly incredible for its lack of commerce.
If you get the chance, be sure to check out Deepwater National Park to see some incredible wildlife and grand beaches. It is also home to some important turtle breeding grounds and you might just witness some turtle hatchlings make there way towards the water.
The hiking is also fantastic: you can explore rock pools at Wreck Rock or climb the giant sand dunes near the beach. You’re also certain to see a diverse group of wildlife, so bring a camera. Many people enjoy their time here so much that they decide to set up camp and spend a night and although bush camping is not allowed, there are many spots on the beach that are quite nice. If you’re not into camping for whatever reason there are a fair amount of hotels that’ll suit you, but if you’ve come all this way you owe it to yourself to spend a night under the stars.
The main source of fun and excitement here is definitely the water and if you’ve never tried surfing before, this is the perfect place to learn. Agnes water is actually home to the “Reef to Beach Longboard Classic” every year, so it’s no surprise that this area has some fine waves.
The beach used to be incredibly isolated as the poor quality of the roads made the area incredibly difficult to access. In the old days Agnes Water was only visited by a dedicated group of surfers who made the trip despite the horrible damage the roads did to their vehicles.
Nowadays the roads are in much better condition and anyone can come and surf the beaches. Surfboard hire is available for everyone in Agnes Water so get on out there and try it, ya wimp.
If you’re tired of getting beaten up by the waves and want to try something new, then why not look into fishing? Agnes Water/1770 Bait and Tackle is one of the best spots for you to depart on an angler’s journey. This place has been operating for the past nine years and will allow you to try all kinds of fishing and camping. Stop in and talk to the experts who know everything about the best fishing on Australia’s east coast. If you want to try your luck on the beach they have options for that, but you would be doing yourself a favour by trying some of the more unique options like fishing from the rocks or going off-shore to catch some giant tuna. They have all the supplies you need and you’re almost certain to catch your dinner when working with the people here. That’s right, you can fry up anything you catch right on the beach.
Turtle Watching
IF you find yourself in this area then you must investigate some of the popular turtle breeding grounds near Kelly’s Beach. We can’t think of a better romantic getaway for any couple trying to put a spark back into their relationship. And honestly, who wouldn’t be turned on by the sight of Loggerhead, Green, Leatherback, and Flatback turtles laying their eggs? Love is in the air every day during the mating season, between November and February.
Watching these creatures come ashore to bury their eggs in the sand is enough to put anyone in the mood for love.
On second thought, maybe it’s not all that arousing, but it is quite a unique opportunity. What you’ll see depends largely on when you visit, but the most amazing sight is watching the tiny hatchlings pop out of the sand and scramble towards the water. This usually happens from early January until mid-March. The 1770/Agnes Water area is a very important place for these endangered turtles and many efforts have been made to keep it that way.
Lady Elliot Island
THIS is the seventh greatest destination for diving in the world and you’ll absolutely love it. No, not that kind of diving, you pervert. Lady Elliot Island is one of only six island resorts on the Great Barrier Reef and one of only three with flight access. Perfectly tucked away in the coral gardens of the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, it’s no wonder this area attracts divers from all over the world. You can see a wealth of marine life here including a resident population of 40 Manta Rays. There are countless varieties of fish and live corals but you may also see some life above the water as well.
Sightings of turtles, turtle hatchlings, dolphins, birds, and even humpback whales have all been reported in this area. The resort on the island only allows 105 guests to stay overnight in order to conserve the delicate environment, but if you’re lucky enough to stay there, you won’t forget it. There are many packages you can book and meals are usually included. It’s an impressive place all around if you have the money.Snorkelling and beginner dive options are available for the less-experienced ones among us. If you’re in the mood for something different, then try a glass-bottomed boat tour. The water is so stunningly clear that you can see right down to the bottom. Even better, you won’t even have to get your feet wet.

The 450 tonne barge was travelling up the coast to be scrapped when she lost power and ran aground. She was taken off the beach, but her damaged hull continued to take on water. On the 23rd of December 2003, the Mv Karma sank off the coast of Deepwater National Park. With depths ranging between 13 and 27 meters it is an exceptional dive for Open Water and Advanced Divers.
