5 Of Our Favourite Greek Islands

Follow us on Google News

The Greek Islands are dotted around the fringes of the Grecian mainland and are undoubtedly amongst the most beautiful islands in the world.

With crystal clear and bright aqua waters, stretches of fine, white and sandy beaches, chalky white buildings with iconic blue domed roofs climbing up the hillsides and of course some of the best seafood in the world, accompanied by an ouzo (what else), the Greek islands really are an odyssey, and should be on any keen travellers bucket list. Here is a countdown of the top 5 islands that you have to visit at some point in your lifetime, all of which are available to visit first hand with Sail in Greece – Greece’s #1 party cruise for the ultimate party tour.

Santorini

Santorini is the mother of all Grecian islands and thoroughly deserves a spot on our list. The island sits on a bed of volcanic rock and its dramatic geological foundations means the island is surrounded by colossal cliffs and striking black beaches. This is a particularly impressive contrast to Santorini’s main village comprising of the shimmering white domes of the Grecian town houses and churches that scramble up the hillside. Santorini is also home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world that also provide the ideal conditions for fun-filled water sports.

Mykonos

Renowned as the party capital of Europe, acclaimed for its natural beauty and classically Greek towns, and the home of Grecian mythology, Mykonos bags itself a spot on our countdown. This island is equidistant from Greece and Turkey and benefits from its location with a brilliant 300 days of sunshine that warms the calm waters for the ultimate conditions for paradise beaches.

Ios

The island of Ios lies just off the coast of the Greek mainland. From a distance, the island is rather unassuming and appears to merely host a handful of quaint Greek villages and towns. However, it becomes imminently clear that this quintessentially Greek village scene is in fact a mecca for party-people. The island showcases a variety of fantastic seaside bars and beach clubs, with legendary parties that spill out onto the beaches and stay strong through the night until the early hours of the next day.

Paros

Paros is a lesser-known island in our top 5 but nonetheless deserves recognition as a holiday destination with unparalleled natural beauty and Byzantine footpaths that connect traditional towns and villages. The island is known for its idyllic beaches and quintessential Grecian towns and villages that snake their way over the hills Amongst these narrow alleyways and cobblestones you can find cozy bars and fantastic restaurants offering the best in fresh seafood and Greek cuisine. The north coast boasts a beach with naturally sculpted rocks that form coves for unique swimming spots

Naxos

This mountainous island is the largest of the group and serves as the beating heart of the Cyclades. Naxos is a firm favourite amongst travellers for its web of cobbled alleyways, filled with the hubbub of tourists, its isolated beaches and coves and its ancient sites. The island is also a paradise for budding walkers who can wile away days on Naxos exploring its fertile planes, winding rivers, verdant vineyards and olive groves for a real taste of Greek culture.
