A Geordie On Fraser Island

Follow us on Google News

A Geordie lass living and working on Fraser Island tells us why she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else…
Shipwrecked boats, wild dogs, kayaking tea tree lined lakes, headland lookouts, towering rainforest, sweeping sand dunes, roaring campfires, the luminous Milky Way and sharing all this with fascinating people from all over the world. Sound like a dream? It certainly did for me.

I’m Jacqui, a 26-year-old lass from the NorthEast of England. I’ve always thought that dreams don’t come true, amazing things don’t happen to people like me. I’ve learnt that I was right, dreams certainly don’t come true, but, if you truly want something, you have to work hard, go out and get it!
And now I live on a beach. Not just any ol’ beach. I live on Fraser Island – the largest sand island on the planet. I’ve lived here for three months where I started working as a volunteer for a locally-owned tour company and I instantly fell in love.

To me this isn’t work; it’s life, just on a much bigger scale when you’re looking after 100-150
people a week. Being a part of this island family has made me ridiculously happy; to be a part of
people’s memories of their travels, to feed them, to make them smile and share the island with
them makes me buzz with happiness. People walk away inspired to be more natural in their lives, whether it be a promise to themselves to not slap on the make-up everyday or simply to walk bare foot and pick up rubbish when they see it on the beach. That to me is people finding their
confidence, being happy with whom they are and loving Mother Nature more than they love their fake Prada handbag.

I know K’gari (a.k.a Fraser Island) has made me completely happy with myself, and to see it have a similar impact on others after just three days is a true testament to how beautiful this island is and the natural beauty of a simple life. Crossing barges with views of splashing dolphins, pods of whales, colourful jellyfish and driving along golden beaches in big 4×4 trucks – I still pinch myself every single day and I watch the sunset over the ocean every night.
Love Life. Love k’Gari.
