A Guide To South Perth
Located only three kilometres from the CBD, South Perth is one of Perth’s most attractive suburbs.
Adjacent to the Swan River and close enough to the hectic life of the city, South Perth is also calm enough for most folks to retreat from everyday routine without having to go too far. It is also an area of culinary experiences, tourism and entertainment, and all you can enjoy with only 15 minutes’ ferry ride from the Barrack Square Jetty in the CBD, and while enjoying the beautiful view of the river along the way, prepare yourself for pure fun and entertainment in the south!
Among the most popular activities in South Perth is to take a walk along the South Perth Foreshore by the river. The 62-hectare wide open space is a perfect spot to get some fresh air and have fun outdoors, whether you want to jog, cycle or walk along the foreshore or have a picnic and a barbeque while enjoying the view of the river and the city across the river. If you come down to the foreshore at night, be sure to get your camera ready – the South Perth Foreshore is simply the best place to enjoy the view of the Perth skyline, and at night the sight of the city lights against the dark surface reflected on the water is so irresistible you can’t help but snap a picture or ten!
If you ask anyone which place to visit in South Perth, most of them will probably recommend Perth Zoo without hesitation, with the zoo being one of the best places in Perth to get up close to Australia’s iconic animals such as koalas and wombats. If you board a ferry from the CBD, the zoo is only about three minutes’ walk from the Mends Street Jetty where the ferry docks, or you can take Transperth buses No. 30 and 31 from the CBD which stop right in front of the zoo. For shopping, not far from the jetty is the Millstream Shopping Centre, located in a small arcade alongside an array of cafes and restaurants.
Speaking of restaurants, of course good food is always an important part of a great tourist area! South Perth and nearby suburb of Victoria Park are well known for housing a number of Perth’s best restaurants, and whatever your favourite is you need not worry as there are various cuisines from many parts of the worlds. Ciao Italia at Mill Point Road in South Perth always attracts a crowd, so don’t be surprised to see people lining up in front of the diminutive restaurant to get a taste of their famous authentic pizza and tiramisu!
Restaurants and cafes are scattered along Albany Highway in Victoria Park, from Western favourites such as The Publican with their bistro-style tapas and Asian delights like Makan2 Cafe with their Malaysian curries and refreshing teh tarik (frothy milk tea).
After an exhausting day, finish off with a drink or two at one of South Perth’s or Victoria Park’s pubs and bars. The Windsor Hotel at Mill Point Road in South Perth is one of the area’s most famous pubs, with classic pub interiors and a garden bar if you prefer to have your drink with a bit of fresh air. In Victoria Park, The Causeway is your go-to place for the best of nightlife in the area. The resident DJs are ready to take you to the dance floor, and if you still have some more energy the bar also provides party buses to take you to Amplifier Capitol in the heart of the city – for free!
Want to enjoy all of what South Perth can offer and make the most of your visit? There are plenty of accommodation options available in the area, from backpackers at $30 – $80 per night to apartments for rent at $125 – $400 per week, depending on rooms. Whatever your preference, you’ll be up for a great stay in South Perth with all the fun!
