AFROPUNK London Review
We were very excited to attend the inaugural AFROPUNK in London. The AFROPUNK festival started in America in 2005, and has been running in Brooklyn ever since. The iconic brand has a following of hundreds of thousands.
Taking place at the iconic Alexandra Palace on 24th September 2016, thousands of fans from all over the world came together for the first event of its kind. On the day we were treated to so many performance from so many talented artists. With the likes of Grace Jones, Young Father, Laura Mvula and Kwabs all on the bill, the day was nothing short of incredible. Three stages on the day played host to music from all genres. We particularly enjoyed the performance from MNEK in the afternoon – he set the scene of what was to come – a truly uplifting day. The end of the night was made by none other than the dazzling Grace Jones. Grace, who needs no introduction, wowed with her costumes, impactful voice and hit after hit.
Aside from the music, the one day festival had a huge marketplace where independent designers sold their wares. The talent in this marketplace was something to be in awe of. From clothing, through to jewellery, art and beyond – there really was something for everyone exhibited through some truly talented artists.
We were awestruck by the people. The people who attended the event were creative, diverse, beautiful and inspiring. They came from so many different backgrounds and cultures – really uniting London, and making AFROPUNK London a truly memorable event.
Being the first event of its kind, we certainly do hope that AFROPUNK London returns for many years to come. We left feeling moved to see such a young, dynamic and talented group of people all in one room.
