Album Review: ANTWON: In Dark Denim
Album Review: ANTWON: In Dark Denim The new full-length mix tape, ‘In Dark Denim’ from the San Jose rapper ANTWON features some of his finest work to date and is surely set to catapult this unique artist into the ‘big-time’.
His super cool, lo-fi persona is a joy to experience and his fresh beat making, mixed with a nostalgic sampling process will impress even the most hardcore of Hip-Hop fans.
Buddying up with his trope of ultra-hipster friends, some of which are slightly questionable choices (Krayshawn, Chippy Nonstop), ANTWON has got all of the right connections to succeed, backed-up by a superb songwriting ability.
His previous releases have seen his songs filled with snippets of bands such as the Cocteau Twins and exciting video edits of the legendary Steven McQueen. He’s nailed his image in the past, and this new material is no different. Even Goldfrapp makes an appearance with her hit song, ‘Rocket’ sampled on the introduction of title track, ‘Dark Denim’.
There’s a tongue-and-cheek essence of gangster rap throughout, but where ANTWON really shines is with his sassy, Pop-esc Hip-Hop on tracks like, ‘It’ll All Make Sense’. It’s a bold and infectious direction for the genre to pursue that has been embarrassing in the past, but this guy’s got it tuned to perfection.
Did I mention it is also free to download?
