In 2018 alone, Alex Williamson played to majority sold-out audiences at six comedy festivals across Australia, New Zealand and the UK; eleven shows in England and Ireland; and a 36-date tour of greater Australia, making him undoubtedly one of Australia’s most popular comedians and social media creators.

How would you describe yourself?
A bit of a reclusive. I don’t live in a forest or anything, but I tend to avoid people. Which isn’t hard in regional South Australia. I think our state population is 3.
What inspired you to get into Comedy?
Watching comedians as a young child, I was never a stand out funny bastard in school. Just became a bit more observant (funnily enough, the same time I started smoking weed).
Is your comedian stage persona quite close to the real you?
I try to keep a safe distance. Definitely a bit of a blurred line at times, but this is typically when shit is not going right for me, so I think it’s good to avoid becoming the character too much. For the sake of my mental health.
Do you have a favourite British or Irish comedian?
Eddie Izzard my favourite British (I think i could pull heels off as well). I also was a big fan of Ed Byrne, Irish fella who is underrated around the world, in my opinion.
What’s your favourite Comedy club in Australia?
I like the Comic’s Lounge in Melbourne. Got a good 80’s vibe about it. Had some of my best nights there, but possibly due to the drugs more than the venue.
The comedy scene in Australia is blowing up. What do you think is driving that?
The internet. We were once a distant bunch of cowboys, now we’re a more accessible bunch of cowboys. Scary thought i know.
What’s your favourite Comedy festival or venue in the world? And why do you love it?
Melbourne International is probably the most glamourous, as far as the amount of desirable international performers on show. But the Adelaide fringe where I live has its own charm, and is a growing force. Also, ounces of weed are $200 here which is fuck all.
What’s the most Aussie thing you’ve ever done?
I have a mate who got a hole dissolved into the muscle of his upper arm from the white tail spider bite, when he was smoking bongs in his shed. Although he is now able to put hide drugs in his spider bite hole and cover them with a Band-Aid, giving himself easy access to music festivals. Most Aussie thing ever, hiding drugs in your spider bite hole.
What’s your favourite Aussie slang word or saying?
Probably the C word. This shouldn’t need an explanation C*nt.
What’s your least favourite Aussie slang word or saying?
‘Fair go’. We got way to many refugees in abhorrent conditions to truly consider ourselves a ‘fair go’ country.
