Anakim tips us on Sound Nightclub, Holy Ship and Philippines

What’s your name and what do you?
My name is Riccardo LeBron. I’m a music producer and DJ under the artist name Anakim (pronounced ana-keem). I’m based out of Los Angeles.
What kind of music do you play?
A dark, sexy, intergalactic style of progressive and melodic techno.
What would you say is your biggest influence?
Trying to create the sound track to what I think outer space would sound like in a nightclub or festival setting is a driving theme in my music and my biggest influence when making new tracks. I look at each new piece of music I compose as a mini soundtrack,
so to speak.
Where’s the best club you’ve ever played?
This may be a biased opinion as I’m a resident there, but for me Sound Nightclub in Los Angeles is the best club I’ve played. I had been going to Sound since it first opened its doors years ago before I even started to pursue music. It was always my favorite club out of all the clubs I had been to in America, and it’s only become better and better since I gained my residency. Quite literally one of the best clubs in my country.
And the best festival?
This year I had the privilege of playing the Yuma Tent at Coachella. For those of you who haven’t been, picture a massive nightclub in the middle of the festival grounds and that is the Yuma Tent. I had gone to the Coachella 7 years in a row as a fan and in year 8 I was booked to play. The vibe and feelings are unparalleled.
Where’s the most unique festival you’ve been to and what was so special?
Last year I played Hard’s Holy Ship, which is a massive festival on a cruise ship that sails through the Bahamas for five or so days. I had never been on a cruise in my life prior. What made it so special is that you’re stuck on this cruise ship with all of these insanely loyal fans, right? You can’t hide from them, you can’t just go to your set and then leave. You are forced to interact with the attendees in a manner that no other type of festival allows for you to do so and that’s what makes it so beautiful.
It was a whole other level of crazy I’ve experienced. That place is wild and unique and I still keep in touch with many of the fans I made there.
What was the most difficult festival you ever went to and was it worth it?
I went to this festival called Soltruistic Summer of 2015. It was in the middle of the Mojave desert. I had no idea there would be no medics or emergency personnel on site, it was so renegade. Temperatures reached unbearable numbers at multiple points. 11/10 Not worth it.
Where’s your hometown?
I’m originally from this gorgeous beach town called Encinitas, just north of San Diego, California, but Los Angeles is the city that really shaped me into the person I am today and where I consider my absolute home.
What’s your favourite local bar/restaurant/bar/club?
People are going to laugh at me for this, but Gaam in Korea town not too far from where I live has to be one of my favorite places in LA. It’s so cheesy at times, but that place can be so much fun it’s borderline ridiculous.
Where’s your favourite clubbing destination?
Spain
Is there something you can’t travel without?
My Kindle! I read like crazy when I travel. Having all my books in one place is a lifesaver.
What travel destination would you recommend our readers add to their bucket list?
Philippines 100%. Especially the islands of Negros Oriental, Bohol, and Palawan. Between the majestic beauty of the country, the food, the friendly people, and the affordability of travel within the country, you will have an incredible time there.
Where was the most surprising place you discovered a big musical influence?
Imagine attending a rave in the middle of an Indian Reservation basically in the middle of nowhere and you stumble upon the style of music you make today. Yeah, that’s exactly what happened to me and it changed my life.
