Argy Interview

Follow us on Google News

The Berlin-based producer, Argy aka Argyris Theofilis, is widely recognized as one of the elite’s of the underground club scene. Releasing on major labels like Cocoon, Objektivity, Ibadan and Defected is evidence enough of his credentials, but on top of that he also runs his own successful label, These Days. So it come as a surprise to hear that the Greek producer have never ventured to Australia in all of his 10 year plus career. But the news has finally broke that he is coming to Australia in what is considered a long overdue tour to showcase his unique style of mixing, which allows him to combine everything from classic techno to deep disco. With the recent release of ‘Chronographic‘, a retrospective compilation filled with Argy collaborations, there was a lot to talk about when we caught up with Argy before his arrival Down Under…

1) Can you tell us a little bit about your new ‘Chronographic’ compilation that was released last month?

Its a compilation of brand new and older works, some unreleased versions and remixes which showcase my musical range from 2005 to 2016. I am opening a new chapter now musically, so I wanted to contextualise this first era of music, my first decade of house and techno chronicles. Features collaborations with artists such as Luciano, The Martinez Brothers, Kerri Chandler, Osunlade, Agoria, Digweed and many more.

2) You’ve chosen to have the proceeds from your compilation go to support the LGBT shelter New Alternatives, in New York City. They’re doing some great things for the LGBT community in New York. How did this idea come about despite you living in Berlin? What is your connection with this shelter?

I met the shelter manager in a bar in West Village. She explained everything regarding the project and I was immediately hooked and promised to help. Half a year later I planned this album and a fundraiser party at Output club NY. House music has given me a platform for expression and I want to give something back to the very source of this music.

3) You’ve played at the biggest house venues in Europe such as Sankeys, Space, Amnesia, Panorama Bar; how do the atmospheres of each vary? Do you have a favourite venue to play in?

My favourites change from time to time depending on the kind of mood I am in or the kind of music I like spinning at each given time. I have demolished the big club myth like I demolished the big record label myth. For example, in Berlin I absolutely adore playing a small club called Wilde Renate for the unreal connection with the crowd. Its all music, people and coming together to have a great time. What is big today is irrelevant tomorrow.

4) How does “Love Dose” compare musically with some your productions today? Do you think your approach towards recording has changed?

Love Dose is magic because its naive. Unfortunately, I lost that on the way even though I try to fake it sometimes. Technically I’m definitely way better and I’m a much better musician now. I could have never recorded and album such as ‘Zodiac Free Arts Club’ back then.

5) What did you learn from your early days at Poker Flat that you’ve been able to apply to your label, These Days?

Unfortunately nothing. Pokerflat is so professional and so consistent even though the label is obviously not enjoying the success it has a decade ago but these things come and go. My label is more freestyle, there is no office, I just created my personal playground for my quirky musical ideologies.

6) Over the years you’ve collaborated with Mama quite a bit in your project Argy & Mama, including the LP Dominonation. How does this experience differ to your solo work? Do you enjoy working with other artists?

I love writing songs with other people, especially when they offer something completely different on the table, like a singer for example. ‘Chronographic’ is full of collaborations so I think its obvious that my studio is open for jam sessions. I love quiet and peaceful sessions.

7) If you could recommend only 3 countries for our readers to visit which ones would you choose and why?

Greece obviously. Then Morocco. And finally America. Really not sure why, I just gave you what gives me butterflies in the stomach when I think of it. These are my Disney lands at the moment. I can be equally creative, have fun and achieve balance on a Greek island, New York or Marrakech.

8) This will be your first time to Australia! We’re very excited! Have you heard much about the music scene here? What are you looking forward to the most, and why?

First of all, I try not to think about the flight. The videos I have watched from the venues look great and I can’t wait to rock the decks. I have been meeting great Australian folks in Europe and I hope I will visit a whole new bunch of them in Melbourne and Sydney. I am thinking of extending my stay if I perceive it as something for me.

9) Music has definitely taken you to many amazing places around the world, where would you like to go that you haven’t been to yet?

People have been trying to bring me over to Australia since 2007 and there was always a last minute obstacle. I started taking it personally. I am thankful that it is looking great now and that I am on board with the right people.
