Artist ANTHONY WHITE considers the political role of art in contemporary society in SIGNS OF CIVILISATION
‘The exhibition’s message of art as agency is especially pertinent today, in a world where tens-of-thousands of people have lost their lives seeking asylum from war, violent totalitarian regimes or religious persecution’ Robert Maconachie’
Anthony White’s powerful yet beautiful discourse in paint draws our attention to the great humanitarian issue of our time—Immigration and migration in the face of the nationalist agenda of the world’s wealthiest countries.
White says:
“Utilising ideas related to Modernism and its relationship to Colonial concepts of empire, my current practice explores the intersection of historical and current social issues and how they relate to contemporary image making.”
The artist’s intense relationship to the physical act of painting is profound. Through his gestural and robust mark-making covering the canvas in swathes of colour, he creates an aesthetic that is dynamic and very much his own. In the context of the new world dynamic, this is history painting for our time.
“Signs of Civilisation” opens at NandaHobbs, 12-14 Meagher Street, Chippendale on Thursday 5 April, 6-8pm. The exhibition runs to 21 April.
