Can You Still Be Sponsored for a Visa in Australia?
Yes, sponsorship is still possible. The 457 visa has been phased out and replaced by the TSS visa, which includes two streams:
-
Short-Term Stream (2 years) – No pathway to permanent residency (PR)
-
Medium-Term Stream (4 years) – PR pathway available
Important Note: Applicants for PR must be under 45 years of age.
Until the transition was complete in March 2018, 457 visa applications were accepted. Now, the TSS visa is the standard.
Advice for Working Holiday Makers & International Job Seekers
If you’re in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) or planning to move, here’s what you should do:
-
Assess Your Eligibility
Consult a registered migration agent to check if your skills are on the 2-year or 4-year occupation list:
👉 Skilled Occupation Lists – Home Affairs -
Search for Employment Opportunities
Upload your resume and look for jobs via the top Australian job portals: -
Mention Sponsorship
Indicate on your resume that you are seeking TSS sponsorship. Recruiters understand the process and can guide you. -
Employer Sponsorship
If you secure a job offer, the employer may sponsor your visa. Pendragon may also be able to offer on-hire sponsorship for eligible roles.
What If You’re No Longer Eligible for Sponsorship?
Don’t panic. If sponsorship is no longer an option, you may still qualify for other migration pathways, including:
-
A different occupation classification
-
Independent skilled migration (based on age, qualifications, English proficiency, work experience)
-
Company-sponsored PR through the Employer Nomination Scheme
It’s vital to consult with a migration expert to explore all your available options.
Top 3 Tips for Employers Hiring Skilled Migrants in Australia
For industries like trades, construction, and engineering, where sponsored talent is common, here are Pendragon’s top recommendations:
1. Work with a Reputable Migration Agent
Mistakes in visa applications can be costly, including refusals or even multi-year bans. Always use registered professionals.
2. Use the Working Holiday Visa as an Entry Point
Many skilled workers start on a WHV before progressing to sponsorship and PR pathways. It’s a significant trial period for both employer and employee.
3. Partner with Reliable Recruiters
Connect with reputable Australian recruitment agencies to find skilled candidates actively seeking sponsorship.
Warning: Never pay for job placement and visa sponsorship as a bundled service. Employers should cover visa costs and recruitment fees, not candidates.
