Australia’s Stunning Cruise Ship Festivals
Forget the beach, old farms and the outback; cruise ships have become the surprise location for some of Australia’s most exciting, eclectic and unforgettable music and arts festivals. Sailing around the country’s coast and into the South Pacific – here are the cruise ship festivals we’re most excited about, and a few tips for first-time cruisers and festival-goers to help make the most of the experience.
Sea ‘N Beats
Australia’s first electronic music festival at sea is dropping 5th – 8th March 2016. Sea ‘N Beats sees some of the biggest names in electronic music perform aboard a luxury, 2,000-capacity cruise ship, sailing out of Brisbane. Globally-recognised acts including Discovery and Alison Wonderland are already confirmed for the line-up – and plenty more are expected to be added in the next 10 months.
The four-day round-trip from Brisbane takes in a day at Mystery Island in the South Pacific where guests can enjoy adrenaline-pumping activities and a special island festival. Guests can re-board the ship at their leisure throughout the day where the festival will continue.
It’s The Ship
Offering passengers up to 75% off Singapore hotels, where the cruise embarks, It’s The Ship is conveniently placed for Australian music lovers looking for a unique experience. Taking place on 20th – 23rd November 2015, the festival will be held on the Mariner of the Seas – one of the world’s largest cruise ships.
Like Sea ‘N Beats, It’s The Ship benefits from an island stop-off complete with private beach party. Stopping on the beautiful tropical island of Langkawi, Malaysia, passengers are treated to a stunning live performance.
Rock The Boat
For fans of the swingin’ sixties, Rock The Boat brings together some of the era’s most recognisable faces and most-loved performers. The Troggs, The Pacemakers and Peter Noone from Herman’s Hermits are amongst the headlining acts of the festival. Held on 6th – 13th November 2016, the seven-night cruise is slightly longer than the other musical festival cruises.
The cruise festival sets sail from Brisbane, spending two days at sea before visiting the beautiful islands of New Caledonia over a two-day period. Another two days at sea precede the ship’s return to Brisbane.
Alongside the live performances, guests will also be able to enjoy additional entertainment, rock ‘n’ roll dancing lessons and interesting seminars from rock music expert Glenn A. Baker – best known for his extensive bibliography on the subject.
Tips For Cruise Ship Festivals
To make sure the cruise ship festival is unforgettable for all the right reasons, we have put together these ten tips to help ensure everything goes swimmingly.
Check The Gratuities
Some cruise ships automatically add a daily gratuity onto your bill. Check with the guest services’ desk on the first day as this can be amended if you believe you are paying too much (or too little).
Consult The Bible
Even if you are not particularly religious, it is worth consulting the Bible if your cabin has one. The Holy Book is a common place for people to leave unused drinks vouchers and other freebies – helping you save a little money.
Pack Essentials In A Carry On
If you are checking a large suitcase onto the ship, it may be a couple of hours before this is delivered to your cabin. Specialist travel agent, Cruise1st, advises: “Pack a change of clothes and basic toiletries in your carry on, so you can freshen up if necessary – alongside important medicines and essential items.
Photograph Your Documentation
If you lose your passport or other forms of ID, you may be subjected to a lot of form-filling and irritating waiting around. This can be significantly eased if you remember to pack a photograph copy of your important documentation.
Turn Off Data-Roaming
Don’t get caught out by expensive data roaming charges by turning this feature off. If you require internet access, block internet access can be bought on board most cruise ships.
Dinner Time Dips
The swimming pools traditionally clear out during dinner times, making these the best times for having a relaxing evening dip without bumping shoulders with fellow passengers.
Check The Group Deals
It’s The Ship have put together the Female Groupie package – giving groups of girls big discounts when booking a cabin. Check for deals for groups – saving money to go towards on-board frivolities.
Cover Up On The Top Deck
The rolling sea air and salty breeze can often disguise the fact that the top deck of the cruise ship is an absolute sun trap with minimal shade. Make sure you cover up with sun cream and light clothing – especially if you are planning a few hours of dancing.
Pack Your Ear Plugs
After 48 hours of non-stop music and partying, you may require a few hours of all-important shut eye. Ear plugs can help block out the sounds of the festival continuing overhead – allowing you to rest up for a second session.
Befriend The Waiting Staff
A friendly smile is often the most efficient method to secure a few freebies and first dips on the dessert trolley. Many cruise ships operate a system wherein guests get a dedicated server everyday – so try and make friends with yours on day one.
