Hey Sam, how are you all?
We’re pretty well. Been touring through Europe for the best part of two weeks and it’s been going well. It’s exhausting. Lots of late, drunken nights followed by extremely large drives. Can’t complain though. We’re playing in some beautiful cities and people are actually showing up!
Where in the world are you now?
Currently in Munich. It’s beautiful. It’s my first time here. It’s a pretty city with a good vibe. We went for an aimless stroll and stumbled across some of the most stunning buildings I’ve seen in my life.
You’ll be headlining Come Together on 7th June; have you been to Luna Park Sydney before?
I don’t think so. I think I might have been when I was a child but I’m not sure. Have to check with one of my parents. I was in Sydney recently and I was looking at it from across the harbour at night and it made me excited to visit.
Will you be aiming to have some fun in the park while you’re there?
Totally. We fly in the night before and have an early soundcheck so I guess we’ll have a few hours to kill in the park.
You’ve recently played at SXSW and Groovin The Moo; is there one festival in the world you’d most like to perform that you haven’t?
It’s hard to say. You can’t fully know what it’ll be like until you’ve experienced it. It’d obviously be cool to play Glastonbury or Coachella purely for the fact that they’re such major players in the festival world. Honestly, the Groovin’ The Moo tour is one of the most enjoyable festival tours I’ve ever done, and I’ve been fortunate to do it twice!
Your live set is always fun and joyous and everyone sings along; do have as much fun as the crowd when performing?
In most cases, yes. If we’re not wrecked and the crowd is bringing the vibes, all the ingredients are there for an amazing set!
What’s been the most unique venue you’ve played?
Recently we performed at MONA in Tasmania for David Walsh’s daughters wedding. It was a private event but it was killer to perform inside such a distinctive and well-known building.
What do you all get up to when on the road?
Playing cards, eating food, drinking booze and talking shit. That pretty much sums it up.
You released ‘Puddinghead’ in April last year; are you working on anything in the studio this year?
We’ve dabbled with a few bits and pieces since Puddinghead. We’ve made a few recordings, but they were fairly aimless and didn’t really have anything that exactly tied them together. I still thought they were cool and might to hint to what we’ll pursue next. We also took a month to just write and play in Brisbane but we realised we’ve moved on from the old days of just playing like a traditional band. Since Puddinghead we’ve realised we work in a much more forward-thinking manner when we’re in the studio. We’re constantly talking about new music in a conceptual way. I’m glad it’s always on our minds and that we’ve had a few hiccups. I think it’ll help motivate us to get good results.
When you return to Brisbane, what would be the first pub/bar/café/shop you head to?
Vietnamese at Quan Thanh in West End is a must, as well as coffee from either Remy’s in Paddington or Scout in Red Hill. I miss these things a lot when I’m overseas.
