Before You Reach Fraser Island
Fraser Island may be the adventure island of Australia, but there are plenty of activities to be done before you make your way over to the dingo-inhabiting, sandy land of four-wheel-driving.
If you’re arriving on Fraser from Rainbow Beach, you can head straight into the beautiful blue ocean with surfing at Double Island Point or scuba diving from Wolf Rock to meet a variety of marine life including the endangered grey nurse shark, manta rays and dolphins. If you want to feed our friends of the ocean, you can do so at Tin Can Bay, one of the few locations in Australia where you can feed them in the wild. You can purchase fish from the boat ramp at Norman Point and get to know the Indo Pacific humpback dolphins that inhabit the waters when they come up for feeding.
To spot another humpbacked marine animal, Hervey Bay is your best bet for Humpback Whales. Not only is it the main gateway to Fraser Island, Hervey Bay is a holiday hotspot in its own right thanks to these migrating giants passing through between July and November every year. Boat tours can take you out to see them as close as possible, but you can spot them from viewing points on land as well.
At both Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay, you can try your hand at more adrenaline activities like skydiving, hang gliding and paragliding, or zip along the ocean’s surface on a jet ski from Hervey Bay to Fraser Island.
If you want to see Fraser from a whole new perspective before you make your way over, take a scenic flight from Hervey Bay and soar over 75 Mile Beach, the ancient rainforest and pure rainwater lakes in a helicopter.
Whatever you choose to do before stepping on Fraser Island, there’s no doubt it will incorporate the spirit and environment of the island!
