Ben Affleck Batman Backlash

The Twittersphere has divided in two as Ben Affleck has been announced as the new Batman. He will be putting his cape on for the 2015 film Man of Steel 2, that unites both Batman and Superman for the first time ever.

The actor-turned-director will be playing opposite the latest Superman, Henry Cavill, who is somewhat sexier. But that’s not the only cause for a Twitter backlash against Affleck.

After unanimous agreement that his performance in Daredevil was rather dry people already have reservations of whether Affleck can really pull off another superhero role. Jokes about Affleck’s role in the painfully awful film Gigli have also been thrown around, and he later went on to win the Razzie Award for Worst Actor for his efforts. Comments have also been made that Jennifer Lopez who was once dating Affleck will be cast as the new Catwoman, and that Matt Damon will be the new Robin. It seems as if a whole can of worms has just been opened.

Some people have had less cynical responses and are looking forward to seeing what Affleck’s got to give. Argo, the film that he starred in and directed, actually won an Oscar earlier this year for best picture. Kevin Smith the popular actor, producer and comic book writer had a particularly positive response with: “Holy shit… BEN AFFLECK IS THE NEW BATMAN!!! Do you know what this means? It means that I’ve seen Batman naked!!!”

This hasn’t deterred the world of Twitter from coming up with ingenious nicknames (Batfleck, of course) and appropriate replacements, with #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck trending worldwide. So far we’re liking suggestions of 2 Chainz, Liam Payne, Dame Judi Dench and Stephen Hawking.
