Best Day Trips From Darwin

Follow us on Google News

Darwin has many draws as a travel destination; the national parks, the lagoons and waterfalls are all things to experience whilst visiting the NT. Here, we take a look at the best day trips from Darwin so you can make the most of your trip up north.
Planning a day trip is a great way to experience the natural side of Darwin, whether you are a nature lover or simply love to chill and enjoy an outdoor adventure. With such wild surroundings, Darwin is a fantastic launch pad into some real Aussie bushland and adventure.

Sweets Lagoon and Berry Springs Nature Park

If you are up for an adventure in Australia’s Northern Territory, then look no further than this nature reserve! Floatplane and airboat tours  give you a bird’s-eye view of the Finniss River and Sweet Lagoon, which is guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping. The lagoon is named after the place where ‘Sweetheart’ the country’s infamous 16-foot crocodile was caught. ‘Sweetheart’, lies preserved within the Northern Territory Museum and Gallery, in case you want to go gawp at the massive creature.
To enjoy a day out at Sweet Lagoon and Berry Springs Nature Reserve, you can book a tour via any one of the tour agencies in Darwin. An early 6.30 am pick-up from your hotel or hostel will take you to the backwoods in a float plane where a river cruise awaits. Whilst on the tour you should keep your eyes peeled for wild boar, buffalo, saltwater crocs and a variety of bird life. After the lagoon, head back to Darwin from where you drive south to the Berry Springs Nature Park. Look forward to some blissed-out relaxation at this nature reserve as it is blessed with three warm water swimming holes. Whilst there, enjoy the lush environment; home to rainbow bee-eater birds, shrimp and archer fish.

Adelaide River and Robin Falls

Get set for a day out in the country whilst on this tour. One of Darwin’s best day trips, you can get to Adelaide River Village in a rented car via the Stuart Highway. Stop there and explore the serene WWII cemetery and maybe a refreshing snack and drink before moving on to Robin Falls.
At Robin Falls, you can enjoy nature in its purest form; take along those walking shoes, as you will want to take on the 20-minute trek along the creek to the twin waterfalls. If you are lucky enough to get there during the dry season, which is May to September, take along your bathers for a refreshing swim. Heading back to Darwin make sure to stop for lunch at the iconic Adelaide River Inn which is home to the iconic stuffed Charlie The Buffalo from Crocodile Dundee.

Litchfield National Park

Located two hours from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is a must see whilst visiting the NT. Make sure to pack your bathers as well as a good pair of walking shoes as there is much to explore and enjoy there. The magnificent termite mounds should be your first stop, the sinister tombstone like mounds are sure to send shivers up your spine, while just 18 minutes along the same road are the Tomler Falls. Take the loop trail back to the car park, and you can head to the popular swimming holes at Florence Falls and Wangi Falls.

May River and Fogg Dam

One hour and fifteen minutes from Darwin is the Mary and Adelaide River area, and the most popular activity there is the Jumping Crocodile Cruise. Join any one of the tours on offer to explore the croc-infested rivers, where the giant reptiles leap out of the water to get at the buffalo meat dangled from above. The Fogg Dam wetland area is a treat for all birders promising views of egrets, black cockatoos, jabirus and kingfishers. Explore and enjoy an authentic outback adventure in this region, probably one of the best day trip locations from Darwin.
