Best Native Australian Restaurants in Brisbane

Confit Possum for Brisbane Best Bush Tucker

So you’re in Oz. It’d be rude to leave without trying some of the native cuisine, right? Before you run screaming for the hills, there are no mealworms, wichetty grubs or kangaroo balls in sight. We’ve rounded up the best restaurants serving proper Aussie grub in Brisbane. Tuck in!

Tukka

As one of West End’s specialised restaurants for local ingredients, Tukka turns native Australian food into an internationally recognised gourmet cuisine, incorporating the freshest ingredients from Brisbane’s bountiful countryside, oceans and even their own garden! They combine these with native herbs, spices and berries to produce a true taste of Australia.

Not sure where to begin for dinner? Start with an entrée of smoked crocodile with spiced poached baby pears for $19. Then for your main, we’d go with either the seared kangaroo fillet, with a purple carrot (you can get purple carrots!?) purée for $29, or the emu fillet with a raspberry and liquorice compote for $32. You’re spoilt for choice on dessert at Tukka, so we’ll leave that up to you…if you have any space left, that is.

If you fancy a lighter meal and would like to visit for lunch (available from 11.30am, Saturday and Sunday only), try the vanilla cured crocodile with a nectarine and strawberry salad for $19. There’s also Tukka’s own emu pattie served on a lightly toasted bun with cheese, onions and bush tomato relish, plus a side of roasted kipflers for just $16.

Six Degrees Cafe & Restaurant

This mouth-watering eatery differs from most other cafes of its type, as there’s ingenuity in the menu hardly seen elsewhere. The range and combinations of food served at Six Degrees, combined with the friendliest staff around, makes this westside establishment a real winner.

But enough arse-licking, let’s talk dinner: we’d suggest the kangaroo rump served with assorted veggies for $29.90, or the grilled sweet chilli and coriander crocodile, also $29.90

Shop 4, 30 Station Road, Indooroopilly

Casablanca

As Brisbane’s number one restaurant for contemporary Australian and international cuisine, Casablanca’s wondrous kitchen offers a wide and diverse range of dishes. Serving everything from premium, flame-grilled steaks and bush tucker to stone-baked pizzas and exotic Asian curries – as well as some grub for you vegetarians out there – Casablanca caters for any and all tastes!

Start off with some calamari rings with aioli for just $10.50, then you’ve got your pick of mains: there’s the kangaroo fillet served on roasted seasonal vegetables for $23.90, the slow-cooked kangaroo stew for $31.90, or the emu steak marinated in bush onion for $25.90. Need a good reason to eat emu meat? It’s 95% fat free!
