Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny, ‘Sweet Tooth Bird’ – Single Review
Having been tipped by critic’s way back in 2009, it’s somewhat surprising that in early 2012 we are still eagerly awaiting the release of Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny’s debut album ‘Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose,’ due out on 24th February.
Although, in an age where young talent is flung at us from a great height each year, it makes a change to see someone given the chance to grow and develop, before hastily hitting the studio and producing something we will have all forgotten by next Christmas.
The band’s new single, ‘Sweet Tooth Bird,’ kicks in like a marching band, full of brass and reeking of psychedelic charm. It’s full and complex, but at the same time effortlessly catchy. With Beth Houghton’s alluring melodies unexpectedly breaking into a sinister, heavily effected vocal, as the brass and drums break away in the mid section, to reveal a piano and strings – right before the fan-fare breaks back in to play the track out in the soaring fashion it begun.
Producer Ben Hiller (Blur, Elbow) has crafted a complex and vast sound, cramming every last corner of the 2 minute 14 seconds. It’s eccentric, brazen and dare anyone say, unlike much you’ll hear this year.
