Big Chocolate Interview
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Big Chocolate, aka Cameron Argon, has had his hand a fair share of various musical genres. After playing in a Death Metal band in his teens he soon went on to create Electronic music under the moniker Big Chocolate. The transition was completely natural for someone who was always interested in music and with the recently increased interest in the Dance music scene it seems like Big Chocolate has finally found a home.
Hi How are you?
Hi I’m good, thanks for asking.
Where in the world are you right now?
Right now I’m in my little bunk in Pennsylvania.
What have you been up to this week?
This week, month, and summer have pretty much been totally consumed by warped tour. This week has been east coast dates. Pretty far away from home at this point.
How is the Warped Tour going?
It’s going real well! Crowds have been fantastic. Been a challenge doing 30 minute DJ sets though.
You seem to have dabbled in a variety of genres so how was it you initially got involved with the electronic music you’re making? Is it something you always wanted to do?
I knew it was something I really wanted to do over other styles in high school, although I wasn’t really making any strides till about 2010. The first step forward to what I’m doing now was a side project called commissioner that was like glitchy d’n’b/dubstep/breakcore mixed with metal. Since then I’ve gradually moved further and further away from heavier sounds.
Where do you draw your inspiration from when creating music?
Time of year. Location. Tools available. Current friends and whatnot. Sometimes other music will inspire me but doesn’t really get my creative drive going.
What inspired the name Big Chocolate? Are you simply just a big fan of chocolate or is there more to it?
Was a joke name I used on 2006. Was funny to me then. Now always sad about it. Although I love chocolate.
This past year has seen a wave of electronic artists emerge – Do you feel as though now is a good time to be creating electronic music?
I would say it’s a good time for people to be using the electronic platform. Not necessary a good time to hop on bandwagons but more so exploring electronic avenues.
You’ve got a bunch of Australian tour dates coming up – Are you looking forward to playing there again?
Yeah very much so. Excited to see the country again and reunite with the friends I made over there my first visit. Having my birthday over there on the 21st as well as icing.
What do you think of Chinese Laundry in Sydney?
Chinese Laundry is sick! I remember it being really really loud.
How much (if at all) has your show changed and developed since the last time you played in Australia?
It’s changed very drastically along with the music I’ve been making. Last time I was there was before any of my recent music was released and or created. I feel like I’m playing a lot more mature sets now than the first time I was there.
Without giving too much away, what can fans expect when they come to see you live?
The jams from my recent releases along with my head space for the future.
Do you get a different response from crowds depending on where you are in the world?
Slightly, but nothing notable.
If you weren’t making music as Big Chocolate, what would you be doing right now?
Probably making music under a better name.
What else have you got in the pipe line for 2013?
Going to block out the rest of fall and winter for writing music and hopefully doing a bit of reinventing myself.
Thanks so much!
Your very welcome! Have a nice day. B-)
