Bombay Bicycle Club – A Different Kind of Fix
Everyone’s favourite band who are named after a curry company: Bombay Bicycle Club, return with their 3rd studio album: A Different Kind of Fix.
“Can I wake you up, can I wake you up, is it late enough, is it late enough?” Jack Steadman queries on the opening track “How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep”, a vibrant, foot-tapping intro to the album and one which sets the tone for the first part of the album: understated guitars, sing-a-long sections, and a more layered production (courtesy of Ben Allen of ‘Animal Collective’ production values)
Indeed, this album respresents a “Different Kind of Fix”, there’s definitely more a of ‘post-rock/shoe-gaze” vibe about this album, and less of the muted acoustic sound that has defined them thus far, particularly with the first 6 tracks
Luckily for those die-hard fans among you, this does work in their favour, as they’re obviously developing their sound and style and despite this being more of an evolution rather than a revolution, they’re heading in the right direction.
Lead single ‘Shuffle’ is probably the stand-out track with its jaunty piano and sing-a-long refrain, reminiscent of last years’ “Ivy & Gold”, but others, such as the beautiful ‘Still’ (which has elements of Anthony and the Johnsons) and the simple effectiveness of “Leave It” are worth a mention, and a special listen for those of you who want to get a feel for the album before buying.
Overall, it’s a solid 3rd album which represents steady progress, but it is one of those that needs a few listens to fully appreciate its intricacies. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
