Celebrated for redefining R&B back in the 1990s, Boyz II Men are returning to Australia this October on a national tour to sing old and new songs to their adoring fans. Hit classics like ‘I’ll Make Love To You’ and ‘End Of The Road’ made them the biggest R&B group in the world, earning them global number ones, Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With a second show announced in Sydney, Boyz II Men’s popularity hasn’t wavered. Here’s what Shawn Stockman had to say about career highlights, new music and today’s R&B game changers before they head Down Under.

Travel to Western Australia

Your shows are selling out across Australia, how does it feel to know that after all these years you can still fill up venues across the country?
It is such an honour to have such a loyal fan base who always support us and come out to every show. We love our Australian fans and the incredible energy they bring to each show.
What kind of show can you promise ticket-holders? Will there be any surprises?
Fans can expect a mix of new tracks from our latest album ‘Collide’, which we released last fall, and all of the old hits that everyone knows and can sing along to. As for surprises, you will just have to come to the show and see!
What are some of the most memorable things to have happened during your shows in the past?
During our hit song, ‘I’ll Make Love To You’, we always throw roses out to the ladies in the audience and that is always memorable! The women in the audience sing along and all try to get a rose so it is always fun to see how they react when we sing and start handing out flowers.

What do you get up to while on the road? How do you pass the time in new locations?
Normally we are travelling in and out of cities quickly so we don’t have much free time, but when we do we like to explore!
What do you consider to be your greatest achievements as a group?
It has truly been an honour to receive so much recognition from a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to four Grammy Awards to Billboard Awards, but I would say our greatest achievement is the music we’ve made for the fans. We feel blessed that they have supported us throughout the years and have helped us gain the recognition that led to all our awards and accolades.
Where do you keep your Grammys?
I keep them in my family room!
You’ve inspired so many of today’s artists, but who are your musical inspirations and influences?
We admire all musicians old and new, but I would say we are all huge Prince fans and have always looked up to him. As for our influences, two of our mentors are Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They always have sound advice and are always straight up and real. Always have been!
You’re credited for redefining R&B in the ‘90s. Who would you say are the game changers today?
There are so many talented emerging artists today. YouTube and social media have allowed for these amazing artists’ voices to be heard. We are big fans of everyone from Trey Songz to Miguel who will continue to change the music industry and R&B.

If you could do an actual #ThrowbackThursday, what moment would you go back to?
That’s a tough one! We have had so many fun moments throughout our career, but winning our first Grammy was definitely one I would love to relive again.
You released your most recent record, ‘Collide’ at the end of 2014; how has writing and recording changed for you over the years? Do you still work in the same ways?
We went into the studio with a really open, experimental attitude – and the whole album came together that way. We weren’t in the studio toiling over nine-part harmony arrangements just because we can… For us, it’s always about what makes the songs sound their best.
How have you been enjoying your residency in Las Vegas?
We have really loved being at The Mirage’s Terry Fator Theatre in Vegas and we now refer to it as our second home.
