Catering & Restaurant Managers Wanted Down Under
Q. I’ve just lost my job as a chef when the restaurant I worked at closed down. This is not the first time this has happened to me so moving to Australia is starting to sound like a really good idea. I’m fully qualified with 3 years experience. What are my chances and how do I go about it?
A. Your chances are very good indeed! The catering and hospitality business in Australia is expanding and the Australian Government put chefs back on the skills lists in July which means you can now apply without needing an employer to sponsor you. In addition there are a number of employers looking to recruit – so at this moment you are spoilt for choice. If you want to make the move quickly the best way is to find a job and if you look at our website you will see there are positions available. The visa you will find on offer is the 457 (temporary work) visa which will allow your employer to employ you for up to 4 years. In addition there is now a transitional pathway to permanent residency when you have been there for 2 year. One other thought – you could start the process of applying for a 189 or 190 (skilled independent or skilled sponsored) visa as well. Your occupation is now on the skilled occupations list which means that you no longer have to depend entirely on your employer for sponsorship and could cut a few years off the time it would take to get permanent residency. As to the cost – it might well be cheaper to apply sooner rather than later as visa fees tend to go up year on year and don’t forget that occupations can be removed from the lists as well as added!
