History of Angkor
Angkor’s site dates back to 9-15th Centuries and contains the reins of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire. The Angkor Archeological Park stretches over a massive 400 kilometres squared which includes the famous Temple of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the Bayon Temple – all complete with countless sculptural decorations.
Angkor remained the centre of the Khmer Kingdom for many centuries, and its many monuments, urban plans and reservoirs depict a highly developed ancient civilisation.
Angkor Today
Today the Angkor Archaeological Park is still inhabited. With many villages with an ancestral history dating back to the Angkor period, archaic traditions are still carried out to this day.
The Angkor Archaeological Park is rich in medicinal plant life which are used by the locals for treatment of ailments and diseases. The Preah Khan temple is thought to have been a medical university and Neak Poan is thought to have been an ancient hospital. Today the locals collect the medicinal plants and take them to other temples to be blessed by the gods prior to using them for treatment!
Today in Angkor you’ll also find traditional practices such as basket and textile weaving, which all help to sustain the livelihood of the local people living alongside this historical marvel.
Visiting Angkor Wat
