Christ the Redeemer: A Modern Marvel Among the New Seven Wonders of the World
A Symbol of Peace and Faith
Towering above the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is one of the most iconic monuments in the world. Standing at 30 meters (98 feet) tall, with an arm span of 28 meters (92 feet), this awe-inspiring statue of Jesus Christ symbolises peace, redemption, and the warmth of the Brazilian people. Its position atop the Corcovado Mountain gives visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the coastline, and the lush Tijuca Forest.
A Place in the New Seven Wonders of the World
In 2007, Christ the Redeemer was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World through a global poll conducted by the New7Wonders Foundation. Over 100 million people from around the world voted in the poll, choosing this masterpiece of art and faith as a symbol of global heritage and culture. This honour placed the monument alongside other world-famous sites like the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal.
History and Construction
The idea of constructing a religious monument in Rio dates back to the 1850s, but it wasn’t until 1921 that the Catholic Circle of Rio proposed the project in earnest. French sculptor Paul Landowski created the design, while Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa oversaw the construction. The builders completed the statue in 1931 using reinforced concrete and covered it with soapstone, chosen for its durability and ease of use. Donations from the Brazilian Catholic community largely funded the project.
Cultural and Religious Significance
Christ the Redeemer is not only an architectural marvel but also a major religious site. It represents Brazil’s strong Christian faith and stands as a cultural beacon of hope, compassion, and unity. Every year, millions of tourists and pilgrims make the journey to the summit to witness the statue up close and take in its spiritual and scenic majesty.
A Global Landmark
Being named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World has only strengthened Christ the Redeemer’s reputation as a must-see global destination. Whether admired for its engineering, artistry, or spiritual significance, the statue continues to inspire awe and admiration in visitors from all walks of life.
