City Sightseeing Tour, Colonia, Uruguay
Visit the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento, the only Portuguese city established along the Rio de la Plata.
Colonia is an interesting mix of old and new. The modern day city is blessed with the beautiful Fernando beach, stunning views of the Ro de la Plata, the Plaza de Toros (bullring) and the Hipodromo (racetrack). It also houses a forest reserve, a port and some old docks. Now, whilst this might fascinate some, what people really come to Colonia for is its historic old quarter.
A tour through this UNESCO Heritage of Humanity site will see you meandering down cobblestone lanes looking at old buildings and remnants of fortifications. You’ll also visit the Spanish and Portuguese museums to learn about the 18th Century old city.
Other important sites to see are the Plaza de Armas, the lighthouse, the Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento (Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament – which gave its name to the city) and the remains of the San Francisco convent.
