Italian DJ and producer, Crookers, is returning to Australia for a nationwide tour following his huge set at Stereosonic last year. Making a return to the club circuit on the back of his successful album, ‘Sixteen Chapel’, we caught up with the man himself to talk about the European summer, big booty music and all things groovy!
Hi Phra, how are you?
I’m good, thank you.
Where in the world are you today?
I’m not sure if I’m in London or Zurich! I just travelled back from the US and my jetlag is pretty bad, so I’m pretty lost!
You finished your US tour at the end of April and you kick off your Australia tour in June, so what are you up to this month?
I’m going to try to recover from this jetlag and finish some of the music that I started during the tour. I started working on 12 new tracks, so I’ve got some tweaking to do this month. I’ve actually done a couple of remixes in the last few days, and I can’t wait to go back into the studio to hear how they sound with proper speakers.
You last came to Australia for Stereosonic, what have you got in store for the tour?
I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s happening in the clubs because I remember the energy and vibe of my first Australia club tour. It was actually the first time I came to Australia to play, which was magic. After that, I never played another club tour in Australia with that kind of atmosphere, and it became all huge festivals. Someone told me that it’s getting back into that grooving atmosphere, so I’m really happy to go back and get that same feeling. I’m really happy to do it for OneLove because they were the first people to call Crookers in Australia.
What will you be getting up to when you’re not on stage?
It’s pretty hectic actually; I don’t have a lot of time to enjoy…my life! It’s a total bummer because you work so much to get to a point, and when you reach it, you have to work even crazier to stay there. You basically spend your whole life touring or being in the studio – which is really good – but if I spend too long in the studio I get bored, so it’s like a nightmare inside a dream. I want to stay in the studio and have a normal life, but I really like to DJ and that is my first love. I really wanted to play music, whether it’s for two or 50,000 people. This year, it’s going to be the first summer in 11 years where I don’t have months free. I’m really, really busy, but I still think I’m going to rest a little bit.
Will you be having a holiday?
Maybe, yes. I think it’s good to find – no, I must have the time, to decide that I’m not going to do anything in August. Bye-bye. It’s crazy because it’s where the money comes in during the summer in Europe, but at some point, I need to stay in the seaside.
We’re loving ‘I Just Can’t’ featuring Jeremih; you spoke very highly of him last time, is this one of your favourite tracks from ‘Sixteen Chapel’?
I know it sounds really cheesy, but I really like every track, even the stupid skits. I’m happy about the whole thing, but now I’m onto the next thing. I really love the album, I play the album in pretty much every show, but now I’m looking at what’s next.
What are you working on at the moment?
I recorded a lot of people in LA, really interesting voices and I’ve got a lot of a cappella now to work for new sounds. Lately, I’m really into vocal music, like house-y stuff. I can’t say deep house now because it’s an offensive word, but groovy stuff, round music. Big booty music.
You’ve worked with so many vocalists, is there anyone you’re yet to work with that you’d like to?
[Sighs] No, not really. It’s funny because 15 years ago I would have said Madonna, but now, I’m not even saying Madonna.
I don’t think anyone’s saying Madonna!
No! But 15 years ago, I would have. Now, I prefer to work with someone that is clever and bright than a fucking overused stupid pop star that doesn’t know what the fuck to do in the studio.
