CSS at The Standard – Gig Review
CSS at The Standard – Gig Review CSS is a band seen by some as a formation built for the 2000’s scenester kids. Some people just can’t seem to admit that they’re just pretty damn cool.
The Sydney gig at The Standard on the 3rd January was more of a simple gathering for fellow fans and lovers of good tunes, crazy-ass front women all in the more intimate of sweet venues.
CSS played a rather well selected track listing from their array of three albums: Cansei de Ser Sexy, Donkey and La Liberacion, adding their quirky ‘new wave to new rave’ sound and touch to each song played.
The atmosphere was pretty electric yet not hectic as Lovefoxxx paraded her sexy stuff for the first few tracks, with her ‘Kiss’ like wig shaking along with her Mick Jagger strut.
As the band were born and bred into Brazilian rock roots in the early naughties, the tracks from the international album ‘Cansei de Ser Sexy’ transformed their sound to a more disco-esque, funk and punk sound. Tracks of the night such as ‘Let’s Make Love’ made the crowds ears do exactly just that.
‘Music is My Girlfriend’ and the near finale of the night ‘A la la’ sounded just as fresh as they did back at the festivals a good few years ago.

Perhaps because they didn’t have that electro uniqueness mixed with their rock touch. ‘Fuck everything,’ for example, seemed to do exactly what it says on the label.
The crowd were lucky enough to experience the vocals of ‘Lovefoxxx’ with ‘You could have it all’ sending shivers throughout the skin and souls of the small intimate crowd. A classic effect and symptom of the CSS synth sound combined with echoey piano power and romance. ‘Let’s Reggae All Night’ is a true hidden gem from the band’s über stocked selection. It led the crowd into a electro pop party that left them crying out for more from a band who definitely do not look like they’re getting “tired of being sexy.”
