The incredibly talented Dubstep producer, Culprate, has gained some serious notoriety underground, with his perfectly executed beats and genius production. At the age of 13, Culprate’s flair for music began when he started learning the guitar. By 15, he was introduced to electronic music production at college, which was the catalyst that led him to explode on to the scene. The now well-established Culprate will be tearing up Chinese Laundry for the first time this month, BBM find out more about what we can expect to see from him in 2013.
Hey, how are you?
I really shouldn’t complain, but I do anyway. Life’s generally good though, thanks for asking.
No problem. Where in the world are you now?
Right now I’m at home in Bristol. And it’s actually a beautiful day!
What first sparked your passion for House and Dubstep that made you pursue this career?
The short answer is ‘Jump up’ Drum & Bass. The longer answer, I really loved Drum & Bass in the late 90s, early 00s, until the music coming out started to become a bit bland. With the exception of the likes of Spor, Noisia and such, I started to lose interest. Then, there was a void. But in 2007 a good friend of mine introduced me to the Dubstep Sound via the Caspa and Rusko Fabric live mix. I wasn’t actually won over right away, so I continued to make Drum & Bass to no avail. So then, the same good friend asked to do a bootleg of ‘Plastician – Japan’ When I uploaded this to MySpace it got a really good reception. Ten times the plays that my Drum & Bass tracks ever received. This made me think that there is more to this sound than I first thought.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Pink Floyd – These guys where true innovators. I could say a perfect mix of sound design, musicality and intellectual spirituality.
The Beatles – Have a similar appeal to me, but they bring a more palatable, or commercial aspect. I have learned that even if you make very obscure, experimental music, it never hurts to have something that people can latch on to.
Squarepusher – What can be said? Genius!! He mixes Jazz with Electronica with such style!
Radiohead – This is a relatively new fascination for me. After seeing Thom Yorke play the whole king of limbs album on the main stage at the Big Chill festival here in the UK, I have been mesmerised! In my opinion they have an almost unmatched musical creativity and production value, so for me, are THE best band of recent years.
Amon Tobin – This man brought the world of Foley sounds into my life! Without him I would probably be making very different music.
Noisia – This goes back to my Drum & Bass roots. There’s an infinitesimally small chance of many people being able to surpass them. They also have a clever way of keeping their sound current, yet true to them.
Quite a mix then! Have you discovered any new artists you would recommend our readers listen to?
Joe Ford makes really interesting Drum & Bass. He is still relatively new to the game, but you wouldn’t be able to tell! Big things await this man in the future.
Zes makes a really nice rendition of what I would call Trip Hop. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Bonobo or Royksopp with a more pumping sound. Sorrow makes Grime, with an atmospheric edge. With obvious Burial influences
What else are you planning on doing while you’re in Australia?
I guess I’ll be hitting the beach where possible and will probably do the tourist thing for a small part. Max and I are planning on visiting some friends in Brisbane for the last week, looking forward to our trip!
You released your EP ‘Great Expedition’ in May, is there one tune in particular from the album that really gets the fans hyped during gigs?
It depends what country I’m in. But usually ‘Scarred’ goes down well in any language. Reboot also gets people moving, especially in Europe.
What’s the track that means the most to you and why?
Probably ‘Two’, for me it represents a big step up in terms of quality and musicality. I basically try and incorporate all of my influences into my music, and I think I achieved that in this song.
Although, there is another track that means a whole lot more to me. I wrote it a few years ago as a kind of “Love token” to my Girl. Since then it has grown on me more and more every time. I listened to it and I was compelled to remake it in a professional fashion. It’s currently unreleased, but will be on my next album.
Any plans to put out an LP soon?
Yes indeed. It’s been a long time in the making, and it’s looking to take a good while yet. It will be similar to ‘Colours’, maybe a bit darker.
What can we expect from you for the rest of 2013?
You’ll have to wait and see…
We look forward to it! Thanks so much and enjoy your day!
Cheers. You too.
