Daudi Matsiko The Lingering Effects Of Disconnection EP Review
There is something comfortably melancholic about singer-songwriter Daudi Matsiko. Influenced by Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and even the Beach Boys, the musician opens up to give us a tour into his private thoughts on ‘The Lingering Effects of Disconnection EP’, which is self-released on his own label Ok Alright on 27th November.
With roots both in Uganda and UK, Daudi has been composing and writing music since the age of eight. Helping him through experiences of trauma and mental health problems, his music is personal acting as a catharsis – raw, heartfelt but with subtle moments of humour. With reference to his lyrics, he explains “I like to combine the stupid with the serious.”
‘The Lingering Effects of Disconnection’ opens with ‘Sandwiches’. Mixing a folky soulful guitar with Daudi’s own dulcet tones reminiscent to a perky Jason Mraz track, it gets darker with a piano chord sequence as the singer repeats “with all my heart”.
Closing track ‘Take Me Old’ speaks of love transcending old age. It is bittersweet and intimate complimented by understated folk guitar and hushed vocals. There is nothing contrived, just sincere and heart warming.
