Débruit And Alsarah Drop New Album ‘Aljawal’
Débruit & Alsarah – an artistic twosome that fuses the inspiring talents of a French artist and producer with a Sudanese-born musician – have released a freshly unique album via Soundway Records, ‘Aljawal’.
Initially brought together by a mutual habit for travelling, Alsarah recognised the pioneering yet futuristic outlook present within Débruit’s music. After living all over the world, Alsarah’s journey has seen her reside in Sudan and Yemen before finally settling permanently in the United States in 1994. However, Débruit – whose real name is Xavier Thomas – encountered such success with his previous musical endeavours that it saw him travel the globe; from Russia to New York, Glastonbury to Sonar, Débruit piqued the interest of many artists and fans alike and this enabled him to perform his dynamic electronic shows to crowds from all corners of the world.
It was out of these circumstances that the brainchild of these two talented artists was born, and Aljawal – which translated aptly means ‘The Traveller’ – is definitely an album to set itself apart from the rest.
Offering a slightly haunting yet unarguably modern adaptation of the classic Sudanese music that Alsarah grew up alongside, the record offers a combination of uplifting and light-hearted melodies accompanied by poetical and silkily spoken vocals. With the ability to capture the attention of all those who listen to it, the album compromises a style that mimics classic Sundanese rhythms and melodies whilst also moulding them into something never heard before – resulting in a definite treat for the eardrums.
