Differences between East and West Australia

Australia is a large continent; take a 5-hour flight west of Sydney and you land in Perth Western Australia,
the same difference of distance between Lisbon and Moscow. While the cultural differences are not as
drastic as Lisbon and Moscow, East and West Australia do have their differences

 Time Zones

The standard joke is Western Australia is always a little behind. A statement that’s true when checking
their clocks; in winter West Australia is two hours behind Sydney and Melbourne, moving to three hours in
summer as the western state does not observe daylight saving times.

The Isolation

The time difference is not the only cause setting Western Australia apart from the rest of the continent. Perth
is often known as one of the worlds most isolated cities, located 2100kms from its state capital Adelaide.
The state is roughly the size of Spain, France, Turkey and Kenya mashed together, its 976,790Sqkms in
total. Vibrant Sydney and Melbourne are 5 hours away!

Low Population

There isn’t enough population to fill the huge state. The total population stands at 2.6 million including
Perth. A trip into the outback will have you traveling for miles without coming across a single person, or
gas station for that matter. Nullabor, for instance, is where you will find the world’s longest stretch of road
146kms, between Balladonia and Caiguna.

Impressive Landscapes

Mysterious landscapes are part of Western Australia. The limestone pillars making up the Pinnacles,
Hamelin Pool in Sharks Bay home to the world’s largest outcrop of stromatolites and the Martian Wave
Rock in Hyden Wildlife Park are one of a kind.

The Sunshine

Perth enjoys more sunny days than any other city in Australia, 265 days to be precise. Take along those
sunglasses you will need them as soon as you step out from the plane. Sunsets are pretty magical too.

Food

Fresh seafood is heavenly in Western Australia. Geraldton Rock Lobster, Mandurah Crab, and South-west
Marron are treats to any foodie. Broome and Margaret River are gourmet food scenes to rival.
