By visiting a traditional town, you can get a real Aussie experience. Nestled along the Edward River, Deniliquin is such a town.
Locally known as Deni, this humble town has a lot to offer. Situated in the Riverina region of New South Wales and not far from the border with Victoria, it has many natural attractions and activities thanks to its location. The largest redgum forest in the world welcomes you to explore and spot the birds and wildlife that call it home. Meanwhile, water sports fans can take advantage of the river by water-ski, but those with a calmer nature might prefer to hire a houseboat and cruise the river at a slower pace. Whether you enjoy kayaking or cycling, spotting wildlife or water-skiing, you’ll find something to pass the time in Deni.
In the heart of sheep-station country, a farm tour is a must-do to see how local produce is made and grown. East Tolans grows wheat and canola in winter and rice and lucerne in summer as well as cattle and sheep, while you can gain some history knowledge of Deni at Cornalla, one of the oldest properties in the area. For the wine drinkers among us, you can enjoy a country luncheon with a glass of wine at Clancy’s of Conargo Winery, or even a Devonshire tea. If all of this food and wine makes you hungry for more, you can browse the local delights at Deniliquin Farmers Market. Held on the second Saturday morning on the month, you can pick up fruit, vegetables, bread, pastries, meat and more for a delicious feast.
With so much country space, Deni isn’t short on accommodation options. We’ve already mentioned the houseboats, but you can also choose from hotels, farmstays, B&Bs, caravans and camping in beautiful surroundings. There’s nothing conventional about staying in Deni, so why not try something new and soak up the charm of the town and its people?
Wine, water-skiing and bird watching aside, Deni is the capital of the Ute, and celebrates this with the annual Deni Ute Muster Festival. This year, Deni Ute Muster takes place on 2nd and 3rd October, and will see another line-up of Australian country and rock legends take to the stage in the evening. These are Cold Chisel, Birds of Tokyo, Lee Kernaghan, Adam Brand, The McClymonts, Morgan Evans, The Sunny Cowgirls, The Wolfe Brothers, Adam Eckersley Band and The Pigs. The festival attracts a massive 25,000 people to Deni, so it’s important to get your ticket so you don’t miss out. An adult weekend ticket is $210 and includes camping (tent rentals available).
