Discover The Abrolhos Islands
Lying in the warm waters of Western Australia’s Leeuwin Current, the Abrolhos Islands are made up of three groups (Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert) of 122 clustered islands that stretch across 100km of ocean, and are home to some of the most incredible marine experiences.
Endangered Australian sea lions, white breasted sea eagles, whales and dolphins are just some of the wildlife that enjoy the tropical and temperate environment. There are also terrestrial reptiles that call the Abrolhos Islands home, including skinks, geckos, dragons, pythons and the marine green turtle, while fluffier residents include the Tammar wallaby and bush rat. Unsurprisingly, it’s become a haven for human visitors too.
One of the world’s top fishing and pearling spots, an underwater world of coral reefs is hidden beneath the gorgeous blue waters. Beautiful in their own right, these reefs have claimed many vessels over centuries gone by, treating avid snorkelers and scuba divers to spectacular wreck experiences including the Batavia which sunk all the way back in 1629. If you don’t wish to get in the water, there are also glass-bottom boat tours.
Lying approximately 60 kilometres west of Geraldton along the Coral Coast, include the Abrolhos Islands in your Western Australia travels and you won’t be disappointed. They’re accessible by charter boat, floatplane or on an eco tour – you can even stay on a live-aboard yacht if you wish to take longer than a day trip, with accommodation, meals and activities included.
