Usually formed in sandstone or limestone rock, slot canyons are different to your typical canyon, due to their characteristic of being deep rather than wide. In fact, slot canyons can be as small as one metre in width, but drop as far as 30m below, due to the way they are formed when water rushes through the rock. They are deep, dark and narrow, so can be pretty daunting to delve within. There are many slot canyons in Australia, so much so it’s one of the most famous countries in the world to discover them.

The Blue Mountains is the most significant area in Australia for slot canyons. Hidden in remote parts, they don’t get much light and are difficult to reach, but some canyoning teams do visit them on summer weekends. If you descend inside these canyons, you need to abseil and possibly swim inside them.

Slot canyons can be find in other remote and wilderness locations in Australia including the Bungle Bungles of Purnululu National Park and Karijini National Park. Globally, there are many in USA, the most prominent of which can be found in Utah.
