Discovering Bali’s Best Islands
Bali surf beaches are legendary, as are the slick and high vibe resorts and the rich Hindu heritage that can be seen everywhere, which makes Bali beloved of holidaymakers the world over. However, for the traveller that likes to keep moving, the island is the perfect launch pad for exploration of its near neighbours to the east.
Leisurely cruises from the charming East Bali town of Amed take in the wonders of Lombok – a gem of an island that is starting to build its own dedicated fan base – as well as unspoiled Flores, the gateway to the nature-lover’s paradise that is Komodo National Park. One of the best ways to travel around the island of the Indonesia archipelago is undoubtedly by boat. There are many tour operators that offer packages, one of the best and most respected being Exotravel.com.
If you prefer to travel at your own leisure and pace and enjoy a variety of foods then here are some of the most popular destinations easily reached from Bali by boat or local plane.
Lombok
If endless deserted white sand and crystal clear blue sea is what you crave, you will find your pick in Lombok. It is easy to move around Lombok with a scooter and there is simple budget accommodation in more popular places. The second highest volcano in Indonesia is in Lombok, and it is definitely considered a highlight with multi-day tours that can be arranged to get you to the top or the crater pool.
Gili Islands
These are three small islands, each one with a slightly different flavor. Snorkelling, swimming, eating and sunbathing are all unsurprisingly popular here.
Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Penida
Snorkelling around this little gem of an island is as good as you would get anywhere, with quiet nights and local food. Roam around the rugged streets on your scooter and stop off at one or two of the island coffee shops. Recently, a few yoga spots have opened up and there is an overall island living vibe.
Flores – Komodo
A short 30-minute flight from Bali takes you over to Laban Bajo, the main town of Flores and a gateway to eastern islands of the archipelago. An absolute must is a boat tour over to the legendary Komodo National Park, established in 1980 to protect the Komodo Dragon, the world’s largest lizard.
