Follow us on Google News

Discover a rich cultural legacy, visit various beaches and bays, swim and snorkel in pristine waters, and meet the world’s happiest animal, all in this piece of heaven. Rottnest Island, located just 19 kilometers off the coast of Perth, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including beautiful marine life and, of course, the charming quokka.

Possibly the most well-known animal on Rottnest Island, the quokka is curious and friendly as it is cute. So it’s very likely they’ll come up to you. Have your camera ready but be respectful and keep a safe distance so they feel comfortable enough to let you capture this special encounter.

Fall In Love With The Quokkas

One major attraction that draws tourists to Rottnest Island is the Quokka. The Marsupial is a relative to many of the famous Australian animals such as the kangaroo, wallaby, wallaroo, bettong and potoroo. Quokkas are no bigger than your typical domestic cat or a hare and are considered to be the happiest animal in the world. This is dues to their adorable smiling faces.

Surfing The Breaks

If you’re able to pull yourself away form the Quokkas then there are great water sports that will keep you entertained and you can always follow up with relaxing walks or just chill out on the beach. For the best spots on the island to get stuck into some top surfing you will want to test your skills at Strickland Bay, Salmon Bay and Stark Bay. These spots are in particular very popular breaks for the most keen surfers as well as bodyboarders.

If you make the choice to grab your board and surf the waves at Strickland Bay, then you can boast surfing at a beach that has been ranked in the top 50 breaks in the world. For surfers, especially for the locals from Perth, Rottnest Island is a popular surfing spot. Surfers are blessed with a number of reef breaks on both sides of Rottnest Island, which includes the Radar Reef, Cathedral Rocks and Chicken Reef.

Rottnest Island

One major reason that many surfers head to Rottnest Island from Perth is because of the bigger waves that can be ridden. Compared to Perth beaches, the Island can offer budding suffers waves that are sometimes two to three feet larger than the beaches on the mainland.
